The Mavericks continue to build up their roster during the offseason.
After missing the postseason in 2023, Dallas has committed to putting more talent around Luka Doncic. It had one of The Sporting News’ highest grades following the 2023 NBA Draft with the additions of prospects like Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper, as well as a trade that brought in backup center Richaun Holmes.
The Mavericks were active during the first couple of days of free agency, re-signing Kyrie Irving and Dwight Powell while also bringing back Seth Curry and signing former top-five pick Dante Exum.
Now, Dallas has added a much-needed physical 3-and-D presence after reportedly completing a three-team sign-and-trade with the Celtics and Spurs to land Grant Williams.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania announced that the Mavericks have acquired Williams from the Celtics and he will sign a four-year, $54 million deal with Dallas.

The Mavericks land Williams, who is the perfect complementary piece alongside superstar guards Luka Doncic and Irving. Over four seasons in Boston, the 24-year-old developed into one of the best corner 3-point shooters in the NBA. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Williams has shot 40.3 percent from beyond the arc on over 500 attempts.
His physical and versatile defensive presence fills a massive void for Dallas, and he has the type of playoff experience that the Mavericks are looking for to get to the next step as a championship contender.
While it hurts the Celtics to let Williams go, the move was purely to save money and preserve salary flexibility down the line. ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported that the trade will save Boston $40 million in tax and creates a $6.2 million Traded Player Exception that can be applied to a deal for a full calendar year.
A bigger intangible concern for the Celtics is that they have now traded away two of their toughest-minded players this offseason — Williams and Marcus Smart.
The Spurs simply helped facilitate the deal and take on Bullock’s expiring $10.5 million contract.
