Defensive solidity isn’t an easy thing to come by in the NFL.

Everyone has talent. But precious few organizations are able to mold that skill into a well-structured unit capable of shutting down opposition offenses.

Perhaps that’s intentional. The NFL has made amendment after amendment to its rulebook to make it more difficult for retinues to maintain their armor under assault.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a well-orchestrated defense lay siege to their foes. It’s brutal, yet also elegant. Teams like the 1985 Bears, 2000 Ravens and Legion of Boom-era Seahawks have proved that a steadfast defense can carry a team to the NFL’s promised land.

That’s also the case in Madden, the sport’s preeminent simulation game. And here’s what you need to know about the best defensive teams in Madden 24.

What is the best defense to use in Madden 24?

There’s little surprise who Madden believes is the best defense in the NFL.

49ers (88 rating)

San Francisco is a defender’s haven in the virtual world, with Madden ranking the Gold Rush gang as the league’s finest. A quick glance at their roster reveals just why the Madden Czar thinks so highly of the unit.

The 49ers have the best middle linebacker (Fred Warner, 96 overall) and EDGE rusher (Nick Bosa, 98 overall) in the game. Steve Wilks’ defense is speckled with more gems, including Dre Greenlaw (86 overall) and Charvarius Ward (87 overall).

MADDEN 24 PLAYER RATINGS:
EDGE | CB

It’s a well-rounded corps that held opponents to a league-best 16.3 points per game in 2022. Bolstered by improving play from youngsters like Talanoa Hufanga, that number could get even smaller in 2023.

Bills (88)

For all of the Bills’ offensive explosiveness, their defense proved so stout last season.

With a hail of takeaways, Buffalo made life hell for opposition offenses en route to another AFC East title. The unit is teeming with ball hawks like Jordan Poyer (90 overall) who get big-time help from pass-rushers like Von Miller (94 overall). Four Bills defenders rank among the top 10 players in their respective positions.

Cowboys (87)

Any team with Micah Parsons (97 overall) is bound to rank among the NFL’s most feared defenses. It’s a testament to the All-Pro EDGE’s productivity over the course of his short career; Parsons followed up his 13-sack rookie campaign with 13.5 in 2022. He also added three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, further cementing his status as the game’s preeminent destroyer.

Parsons isn’t alone, though. Demarcus Lawrence (90 overall), Trevon Diggs (87 overall) and newcomer Stephon Gilmore (91 overall) bolster a loaded unit that promises to frustrate foes in 2023.
