Manchester City showed their champions mentality to come from behind and beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park. The recently crowned world champions showcased their exceptional class in a challenging encounter against Sean Dyche’s side.
Jack Harrison, a former City player, scored for Everton after just 29 minutes but Guardiola’s men managed to equalise when Foden beat Jordan Pickford at his near post with a sensational strike early in the second half. Alvarez converted a penalty to take the lead after Amadou Onana blocked Nathan Ake’s close-range shot with a raised arm. Bernardo Silva then finished the Toffees off after a poor clearance by Pickford in City’s first game since winning the Club World Cup.
The evening took a downturn for City in the first half as they faced a setback with John Stones suffering a needless injury. Fans online expressed their frustration with the Premier League’s offside rule as the centre-back was forced into a last-minute challenge to prevent Beto from scoring despite the Everton striker being offside. Premier League officials are instructed to refrain from raising the flag during potential offside calls to allow the play to reach a natural conclusion, preventing premature offside rulings.
The PGMOL has previously stated that this approach prevents game-altering mistakes. However, in practice, there have been instances where linesmen failed to make obvious calls, and players risked injury to prevent scoring opportunities, as was evident with Stones tonight.
For City, it means they keep up with the pack and they’ve got two games in hand on league-leaders Liverpool. Both Arsenal and Spurs, who are ahead of City in the league, play on Thursday evening.

FT: That’s it from Goodison where City get back to winning ways in the Premier League with a fantastic comeback against Everton.
91st minute: Foden hits the post with a rocket! Pickford was beaten.
86th minute: GOAL! 3-1! That should be that. It’s an unreal finish from the Portuguese midfielder who takes full advantage of Pickford losing the ball at the back on the edge of the 18-yard box. He then chips it delightfully into the back of the net.
82nd minute: After a few tasty altercations, it’s settled down now and City are looking to see this one out.
75th minute: A huge chance for Everton! It’s a great counter-attack and Harrison delivers a low cross to Calvert-Lewin who narrowly misses the net by inches as it goes wide of the post.
72nd minute: Silva’s assist for Foden puts him in elite company.

53rd minute: GOAL! 1-1! It’s an absolute rocket from Foden to get his side level. City play the ball really well around Everton’s box and Bernardo lays it off to Foden on the right who takes a touch to take the ball out of his feet before letting one rip. It’s a super strike.

39th minute: Fortunately for City, Stones is back up on his feet but is limping. Gvardiol is warming up.
36th minute: John Stones gets the better of Beto but the Everton striker is offside anyway. In the process, Stones gets his ankle stuck in the turf and has injured himself.
32nd minute: The ball falls to Rodri on the edge of the box but he can’t keep his effort down and it sails over the bar.
29th minute: GOAL! 1-0 EVERTON LEAD! A rare mistake by Rodri leads to a wonderful opportunity and Harrison is picked out by McNeil! It’s a tidy finish from the former City man.
26th minute: Everton’s deep cross from McNeil is well defended by City and the danger is cleared. The Toffees are handling City well so far.
14th minute: SAVE from Pickford! Another one by the Everton goalkeeper as he denies Alvarez brilliantly with the outside of his left boot.
9th minute: Silva plays a short pass from the corner on the right, and possession eventually reaches Walker. He fires a powerful right-footed shot from long range towards the bottom-right corner. It’s deflected off the wall of Everton’s blue shirts and narrowly steers the ball away from Pickford’s goal.
4th minute: City are already hitting their stride as Julian Alvarez’s effort from close range is well saved by Pickford. The visitors have been dominant in possession to open the game, as they so usually do.

Everton vs Man City lineups
Idrissa Gueye had to be substituted during the defeat to Tottenham and is a major doubt for this game. His replacement Andre Gomes scored and is in line for his first start of the season after a long time out with a calf problem.
Abdoulaye Doucoure (thigh) is pushing to be a part of Dyche’s midfield options, while veteran fullbacks Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young also face late checks.
Everton lineup (4-5-1, right to left): Pickford (GK) β Patterson, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Mykolenko β Garner, Onana, Gomes, Harrison, McNeil β Beto.
City fans were excited by the return of Kevin De Bruyne to first-team training during the Club World Cup, although this game is almost certainly comes to soon during his recovery from hamstring surgery.
Rodri was the victim of a horror tackle from Fluminense’s Alexsander and had to be substituted in Jeddah, although the Spain midfielder appears to have come through effectively unscathed.
Erling Haaland is pushing to return from the foot problem that has sidelined him from City’s past four games across all competitions, while Jeremy Doku (thigh) is expected to miss out once again.
Man City lineup (4-5-1, right to left): Ederson (GK) β Walker, Stones, Akanji, Ake β Nunes, Rodri, Silva, Foden, Grealish β Alvarez.
