The sun is setting on Belgium’s “Golden Generation” but expectations remain high ahead of their opening Euro 2024 Group E match against Slovakia in Frankfurt.
The likes of Eden Hazard, Dries Mertens and Toby Alderweireld left the stage after the disappointment of a group-stage exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but the Euros draw has been reasonably kind to Domenico Tedesco’s side, with Romania and Ukraine completing the section.
Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are facing up to what might be the final tournament of their peak years, while that attacking prowess is underpinned by five clean sheets in six matches heading into their campaign in Germany.
Although the Red Devils represent a sizeable step up in quality, Slovakia arrived at Euro 2024 boosted by back-to-back 4-0 friendly wins over San Marino and Wales.

Belgium vs. Slovakia lineups, team news, starting 11
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was not included in the 26-man Euro 2024 squad. Despite starting the UEFA Champions League final, Tedesco did not believe he was ready for the rigors of tournament football following an ACL injury that decimated his 2023/24 campaign.
Belgium are set to be without the services of veteran defender Jan Vertonghen and Arthur Theate for their group opener due to injury, while fellow defender Thomas Meunier is also a significant doubt.
The Red Devils are likely to line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation on Monday, with Koen Casteels expected to get the nod in between the sticks.
The country’s all-time leading goalscorer, Romelu Lukaku, will likely lead the line, with further attacking support arriving from Manchester City duo Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne, as well as Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard.
Injuries mean Axel Witsel may operate as a makeshift centre-back, while Everton’s Amadou Onana should be joined by Orel Mangala in the middle of the park.
Belgium projected starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Casteels (GK) — Faes, Witsel, De Cuyper — Castagne, Mangala, Onana, Doku — Trossard, De Bruyne — Lukaku.
Slovakia centre-back Denis Vavro is a doubt ahead of their first game of Euro 2024 as he is nursing a slight thigh problem, but it is expected that he will be fine to feature for his side on Monday.
Despite recent injury concerns, Juraj Kucka should also be fit to feature in the middle of the park, while Robert Bozenik, who has seven goals for his national team, will spearhead their attack.
At the back, Milan Skriniar headlines as one of the best centre-backs in Europe, while David Hancko has been one of the standout defenders in the Eredivisie in recent times and should be a certain starter at left-back here.
Slovakia projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Dubravka (GK) — Pekarik, Vavro, Skriniar, Hancko — Kucka, Lobotka, Duda — Schranz, Bozenik, Haraslin.
