For the first time since 1981, two of the most high-profile, historic teams in baseball will meet in the World Series.

On Friday night, the Yankees will visit the Dodgers in Los Angeles to kick off the 2024 World Series. While baseball’s a sport where the top individual stars aren’t always guaranteed opportunities to go deep into the postseason, this year’s World Series matchup defies the sport’s logic by featuring some of league’s most recognizable players.

Of course, that star conversation begins with the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani. After taking his talents from one side of L.A. to the other over the offseason, earning himself a record-breaking $700 million deal in the process, Ohtani put forth one of the best-ever offensive seasons. The Dodgers’ designated hitter now owns the first 50 homer-50 stolen base season in MLB history, and in his first postseason appearances, he’s helped Los Angeles reach the biggest stage in the game.

Even outside of Ohtani, the Dodgers have relied on consistent offensive production throughout the postseason. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman remain two of the best veteran hitters in the game, and some of the players in the bottom of manager Dave Roberts’ lineup, like Kike Hernandez and NLCS MVP Tommy Edman, have stepped up to the postseason stage.

Similar to the Dodgers, the Yankees’ playoff run has been all about their offensive production. In series wins over the Royals and Guardians, the team’s three sluggers — Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton — have combined for 10 home runs, with Stanton, the ALCS MVP, doing the heavy lifting. The top of the Yankees’ lineup can strike fear into any opposing pitcher, and it’s helped New York come out of the AL bracket with some thrilling victories.

While pitching hasn’t been the main focus for either club in the postseason so far, both teams will turn toward arguably their best available starters on Friday. Jack Flaherty will get the ball for Los Angeles, while Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for New York in Game 1.

Two of the biggest spenders, most iconic franchises, and deepest lineups in MLB will each begin their quest for a World Series title on Friday, and the 2024 season comes down to a matchup between the postseason’s two No. 1 seeds: the Yankees and Dodgers.

World Series live updates, results, highlights from Yankees vs. Dodgers Game 1

(All times ET)

11:00 p.m. — We have maximum drama in the top of the ninth. Blake Treinen will come in to face Aaron Judge after Juan Soto is intentionally walked. Two runners on, two outs for Treinen vs. Judge.

10:56 p.m. — We have some controversy in Game 1. Kopech retired Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo, but with two outs, Torres lifts a pitch to the left field wall. A fan reaches over and catches the ball, making it a double instead of a go-ahead home run.

10:51 p.m. — Freddie Freeman flew out to center to end the eighth. Michael Kopech is set to face Wells, Verdugo and Torres in the top of the ninth in a tie game.

Yankees 2, Dodgers 2

10:48 p.m. SACRIFICE FLY— Betts lifts a ball to center field, which is enough to bring Ohtani home. Game 1 of the World Series is tied in Los Angeles.

10:45 p.m. — Luke Weaver will come in to face Mookie Betts with one out in the bottom of the eighth and the Yankees up by one.

10:43 p.m. — Shohei Ohtani now represents the tying run on third base. His first World Series hit is a double off the right field wall, but Volpe bobbles the ball as it reaches the infield. Ohtani sprints to claim an extra bag.

10:37 p.m. — Alex Vesia took the mound for the Dodgers in the top of the eighth, and he does his job. Chisholm and Rizzo struck out, then Volpe lined out. Los Angeles has Edman, Ohtani and Betts due up in the bottom of the eighth.

10:29 p.m. — Lux grounds out. New York will take its lead into the eighth inning after escaping a jam.

10:26 p.m. — Tommy Kahnle will come in to face Gavin Lux with two outs. Another huge spot is coming up in Game 1.

10:24 p.m. — Holmes hit Muncy with a pitch, then Kike Hernandez bunted to advance the two runners into scoring position. Los Angeles has an opportunity to tie or take the lead.

10:19 p.m. — After one batter in the seventh, Cole’s night is over with a final line of one run, four hits and four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Clay Holmes is coming in for New York.

10:17 p.m. — Gerrit Cole remains in the game for the Yankees, but he allows a leadoff single to Teoscar Hernandez.

10:12 p.m. — Stanton strikes out to send this game to the bottom of the seventh.

10:03 p.m. — Betts and Freeman go down, and Gerrit Cole escapes the jam. He’s through six innings, allowing one run and three hits so far.

10:00 p.m. — Ohtani grounds out, but moves the tying run over to third.

9:58 p.m. — The bats are now heating up on both sides. Edman gets a leadoff double against Cole, with Shohei Ohtani coming up.

9:54 p.m. — In a huge spot, Banda comes through with a strikeout against Verdugo to end the half inning. New York will take its one-run lead into the bottom of the sixth, though.

9:51 p.m. — The Yankees are threatening more runs in the sixth inning. Against the Dodgers’ Anthony Banda, Chisholm singled, Volpe was intentionally walked and Wells reached on an infield hit after a huge diving stop from Edman to prevent a run. The bases are juiced for Alex Verdugo.

9:43 p.m. — Jack Flaherty’s night is over. One mistake to Stanton changed everything, but otherwise, he was excellent through five frames. Over 5.1 innings, he allowed two runs and five hits while striking out six.

Yankees 2, Dodgers 1

9:42 p.m. HOME RUN — Giancarlo Stanton stays red hot. After his huge ALCS performance, he picks up his sixth home run of the postseason on a sky-scraping shot to give the Yankees the lead.

9:40 p.m. — Judge goes down swinging, his third strikeout against Flaherty in as many at bats.

9:38 p.m. — Soto singles to begin the sixth inning. With Judge and Stanton due up next, this could be a massive series of pitches for Flaherty.

9:34 p.m. — Lux flies out, and the fifth inning comes to an end. However, Los Angeles has the first lead of the World Series, which could be crucial in what’s been a pitcher’s duel so far.

Dodgers 1, Yankees 0

9:30 p.m. SACRIFICE FLY— We finally have a run in Game 1 of the World Series. Smith flies out to right, but Hernandez hustles home to put the Dodgers up by a run.

9:29 p.m. — Kike Hernandez triples to right field, and Los Angeles is threatening to score the game’s first run. Will Smith now comes to the plate.

9:24 p.m. — Alex Verdugo notched New York’s third hit, but Flaherty finishes off another strong frame. The Dodgers’ starter is up to 74 pitches in five scoreless innings.

9:21 p.m. — Flaherty strikes out Volpe and Wells to begin the top of the fifth. He’s up to five strikeouts tonight.

9:19 p.m. — It’s been a historically quiet offensive start to the 2024 World Series:

9:14 p.m. — The Dodgers go down in order in the bottom of the fourth. Cole and Flaherty continue to glide through each half inning, and they’ve combined to allow just three hits so far.

9:08 p.m. — Rizzo makes an impressive over-the-shoulder grab in shallow right field to retire Mookie Betts:

9:05 p.m. — Once again, Flaherty cruises through an inning. Stanton, Chisholm and Rizzo go down in order in the top of the fourth, and this scoreless matchup is already flying by.

8:59 p.m. — Cole gets the best of Ohtani again, this time striking him out on five pitches. Game 1 has been a pitcher’s duel between Cole and Flaherty through three innings.

8:57 p.m. — Cole sends Gavin Lux and Tommy Edman down on two flyouts to begin the bottom of the third. Ohtani comes up with the bases empty and two outs.

8:51 p.m. — Judge strikes out to end the top of the third. Flaherty has three strikeouts in three scoreless innings.

8:49 p.m. — New York gets another baserunner to begin the third inning, but Flaherty erases the threat by forcing Soto to ground into a double play.

8:44 p.m. — Cole is off to a strong start in Game 1. He strikes out Will Smith to send the Dodgers down 1-2-3, and the Yankees ace has needed just 23 pitches through two scoreless innings.

8:19 p.m. — Flaherty found a little trouble in the top of the first, as Giancarlo Stanton reached on an error to put two runners on. However, Jazz Chisholm Jr. grounds out to second, bringing the Dodgers’ lineup up against Gerrit Cole.
