Week 9 opens on Halloween, with the Texans and Jets facing off on “Thursday Night Football” to end the month of October.

Houston enters the game in good position halfway through the season, sitting at 6-2 with a two-game lead for first in the AFC South. The team is coming off a big division victory over Indianapolis, winning three of its past four games.

Despite the success, C.J. Stroud & Co. still have to overcome some major injuries. Wide receiver Nico Collins will miss his fourth straight game with a hamstring injury, while veteran Stefon Diggs tore his ACL last week and is out for the season.

On the other side, the Jets are in free-fall and looking to turn their season around. New York has lost five straight games, with its last victory coming on “TNF” in Week 3 against the Patriots. The Jets sit at 2-6, tied for last place in the AFC East.

Since that game, New York has fired its head coach, demoted its offensive coordinator, and traded for premier receiver Davante Adams, but nothing has worked yet. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is dealing with multiple lower body injuries, but he will make his ninth start of the season and currently has 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions this year.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the Week 9 matchup.

Texans vs. Jets live updates, highlights from Week 9 ‘Thursday Night Football’ matchup

(All times ET)

Fourth quarter

11:27 p.m. โ€” Stroud manages to get it down to the three for first-and-goal after scrambling for six yards and a penalty on Gardner for defensive holding. He can’t find Ogunbowale at the goal line on the next play, and then he’s sacked out of a timeout for a loss of eight. Notably, it’s Reddick’s first sackโ€”albeit just halfโ€”with the Jets.

11:25 p.m. โ€” Stroud is out of sync, using up two plays on two more incompletions. On third-and-10, Stroud then finds Woods for 12 yards to the 12 with 1:11 to close a 11 point gap. The QB then throws another bad toss to Hutchinson, and it’s second-and-10.

11:22 p.m. โ€” The QB throws another bad pass out of the break to Dell, then he finds Schultz for an eight yard gain to set up fourth-and-two at the Jets 49. Then, Stroud scrambles for 25 yards to the Jets 24 with 1:28 on the clock.

11:18 p.m. โ€” Stroud throws yet another incompletion to Schultz as the clock expires for the break, setting up second-and-10 at the 43, down 11.

11:15 p.m. โ€” The Texans get it back on their own 30, and Stroud throws two incompletions before Houston is penalized for delay of game. Then, Stroud throws it deep toward Dell where he is fouled by Oliver who interferes. The Texans get the ball back on their own 43 with a fresh set of downs just before the two minute warning.

Jets 21, Texans 10

11:10 p.m. โ€” ADAMS ALL BUT SEALS IT FOR THE JETS! The wideout scores his first receiving touchdown in New York after clearing concussion protocol, cementing the team’s first win since Week 2. The Jets lead 21 to 10 with just under three minutes on the clock, as Rodgers showcases his late game heroics once again.

11:07 p.m. โ€” Rodgers completes a 12 yard try to Yeboah out of the break, setting his offense up at the Houston 44. Allen is stuffed behind the line of scrimmage for a slight loss, then Wilson makes another grab and stays in bounds to keep the clock running. Houston takes a timeout with just under three minutes remaining and third-and-three on deck.

11:05 p.m. โ€” Thankfully, Adams returns at just the right moment for New York, entering after another Hall carry for four yards. The Jets take their first timeout of the half with third-and-one to go on their own 44, four minutes in regulation.

11:03 p.m. โ€” Hall takes it for two before tacking on 13 more for the first down to the 35. Rodgers continues to do what he does best, running out the clock with another pass to Wilson who stays in at the 40.

11 p.m. โ€” FAIRBARN HITS THE UPRIGHT! The Texans miss out on an opportunity to close the gap as the kicker dinks this one off the pole, and the Jets have just under seven minutes to maintain a four point lead with the ball on their own 20.

10:57 p.m. โ€” Fairbarn comes on to take a 43 yard kick which he hits, but the score is canceled out by an unnecessary roughness call on Watts for hitting the long snapper. The Texans get a fresh set of downs on the 12 as a result, and Mixon takes two straight carries to the nine before Stroud throws an incompletion to bring up fourth-and-seven.

10:55 p.m. โ€” Mixon takes two carries for five yards before he takes a snap and tries to hit Stroud in the end zone. He appeals for a pass interference but no flag was thrown, then Stroud is taken all the way back to the 27 and sacked to bring up fourth-and-long.

10:52 p.m. โ€” Stroud hands it off to Taylor up the middle for a seven yard gain before scrambling himself out of bounds at the line of scrimmage. It’s fourth-and-inches when a medical timeout is called as the officials take Oliver out for evaluation.

10:50 p.m. โ€” It doesn’t take long for the Texans to get right back in it after Patterson’s 65 yard kickoff. Stroud finds Dell out the gate for a 50 yard reception, setting Houston up at the Jets 24. Mixon adds two and the Texans face second-and-eight with 12 to go.

Jets 14, Texans 10

10:47 p.m. โ€” WILSON HAS BROUGHT THE JETS BACK TO LIFE! The call is overturned and the receiver’s catch earns six and the lead for New York with 12:54 in regulation. Patterson hits the XP, and the Jets are up by four.

10:45 p.m. โ€” GARRETT WILSON OH MY GOODNESS! The receiver makes another all-time grab, this time in the back of the end zone. He is ruled out of bounds, but the play is under review after a Jets challenge to check whether his shin was down in bounds. In other news, Adams is in the locker room under review for a conscussion.

10:43 p.m. โ€” Rodgers scrambles up the middle for a 13 yard gain, but Fashanu is flagged for offensive holding and the play comes back. What was once a obvious scoring opportunity has turned into third-and-long with 13 minutes to go.

10:42 p.m. โ€” Now second-and-six after a four yard grab by Ruckert, Conklin makes a -3 yard reception before being taken down by Pitre. Pitre stays down at the end of the play as Conklin appeals for a flag, setting up third-and-nine at the 16.

10:40 p.m. โ€” The third quarter begins with a foul on Stingley for illegal contact, reversing an incomplete pass in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-one and gifting the Jets a fresh set of downs in the red zone.

Third quarter: Texans 10, Jets 7

10:35 p.m. โ€” Rodgers throws an incompletion with just over a minute remaining, then he finds Wilson for nine to bring up third-and-one before Hall can’t quite get the first down as the clock winds down to end the frame. The injury bug continues for New York as well, with Carter questionable with a back issue.

10:33 p.m. โ€” It is likely Adams will have to go through concussion testing, but he is up and walking into the tent.

10:30 p.m. โ€” Hall runs for four more, then Allen takes it for two to set up third-and-four at the Texans 48. Wilson makes a three yard grab to bring up fourth-and-one, and Rodgers fires up the left sideline to Adams. He catches it for the first down before being blasted out of bounds, landing awkwardly on his shoulder and head unable to get up.

10:25 p.m. โ€” Fairbarn boots it for a touchback and Rodgers’ first pass is incomplete to Wilson. Hall makes a short catch and turns for a 13 yard gain. He is brought down but pops back up and continues running for a second or two, appearing to believe he was not fully down. The ball is spotted at the Jets 43.

Texans 10, Jets 7

10:22 p.m. โ€” HOUSTON TAKES THE LEAD! Stroud’s blunder doesn’t stop Fairbarn for making good on a 54 yard effort, putting the Texans up three with 4:11 in the quarter. The nine-play, 20-yard drive was unimpressive, but Jets mistakes made it worthwhile.

10:20 p.m. โ€” Taylor takes two carries for 16 total to the Jets 24, then Stroud fires wide right to Dell who can’t pull it in on the sideline. On second-and-10, Mixon tries to take it forward but is stuffed for a loss of one. It only gets worse when Stroud is sacked for a loss of 11, bringing up fourth-and-long from the 36.

10:18 p.m. โ€” Patterson kicks it off to the Houston one and Sims returns it to the 29. Yeboah is called for a facemask, allowing the Texans to advance to their own 44 before the drive even begins. Stroud scrambles for three to start before Mixon adds six more, then Stroud tacks on seven into Jets territory to set up first down.

10:16 p.m. โ€” Several injury updates are coming in for both teams out of the break:

Texans

  • DE Will Anderson Questionable (ankle)
  • G Kenyon Green Out (shoulder)

Jets

  • G Jake Hanson Out (hamstring)
  • CB DJ Reed Questionable (head)
  • DE Soloman Thomas Questionable (knee)

Texans 7, Jets 7

10:15 p.m. โ€” TOUCHDOWN JETS! New York is on the board thanks to a beautiful one-handed grab by Wilson, who extends for the catch around the 15 yard line, securing the ball and making his way to the end zone for the score. Patterson hits his first extra point with the team, and this game is back even with 9:03 in the third.

10:10 p.m. โ€” The Jets are rolling as Rodgers finds Adams on the outside, who powers forward for a 12 yard gain and a first down. Hall gets his eighth carry of the game for seven before Rodgers finds Williams for six yards and another fresh set of downs at the Houston 19.

10:08 p.m. โ€” Allen takes another carry for five more before Rodgers finds Wilson for a gain of seven. Then, the QB scrambles out of the pocket and throws it away toward Allen to bring up second-and-10 at the Texans 45.

10:05 p.m. โ€” The Jets kick things off from their own 30 after Fairbarn boots it deep, and Hall takes the first two handoffs to set up third-and-one. Allen makes his first carry of the game and gets the first down on a four yard gain.

Halftime: Texans 7, Jets 0

9:52 p.m. โ€” JETS PUNT. The Texans get it back on their own 20 with five seconds left, and Stroud re-enters to kneel it out. Houston heads into the locker room with a one-score lead despite holding Rodgers to one of his worst halves of all time. It’s safe to say fans are not having it.

9:50 p.m. โ€” The Jets regain possession at their own 46, and Rodgers finds Adams to start for five. Then, the QB can’t find his longtime receiver twice in a row before the team takes a delay of game to go three-and-out.

9:45 p.m. โ€” TEXANS MISSED FG. Mixon takes two carries for six before Stroud finds Dell at the New York 34. Then, the QB throws two incompletions before he’s sacked for a loss of four, injuring himself on the play. The Texans take a timeout with Fairbarn entering to kick a field goal which he misses wide right, keeping the game at one score.

9:40 p.m. โ€” JETS PUNT. The Jets face more bad luck as Rodgers is sacked by Autry for the second time tonight, and New York punts it after taking a timeout out of the break.

9:35 p.m. โ€” Fairbarn boots it 65 yards for a touchback, and Rodgers finds Adams for the first time tonight for a 12 yard gain. Hall takes a handoff for a loss of one before Wilson grabs a one yard catch to set the Jets up at their own 42 with third-and-10 to go at the two minute warning.

Texans 7, Jets 0

9:31 p.m. โ€” MIXON PUNCHES IT IN! The Texans finally get something on the board as the RB completes a 98 yard drive with an emphatic three yard effort. The extra point is good, and the 8:23 drive concludes with 3:21 in the half.

9:30 p.m. โ€” Mixon takes it for another loss of two before Stroud throws an incompletion to set up third-and-12 from the 17. The QB manages to find Dell inside the five for a first down, picking up 14.

9:25 p.m. โ€” Both Reed and Gardner return to the secondary, and Mixon takes it for a loss of two before Stroud makes up for it with a 12 yard scramble to the Jets 15 with 5:44 to go.

9:22 p.m. โ€” Stroud looks deep for Schultz, but he can’t pull it in and Gardner is injured on the play, walking off under his own power. The CB is called for holding as well, setting up Houston at the Jets 36 with a fresh set of downs. Mixon takes another carry for 11 and McDonald is now down for New York.

9:18 p.m. โ€” Mixon takes four straight carries to set Houston up at their own 26, and Stroud finds Schultz for seven more to the 33 for second-and-three. There’s a flag on the next play on Woods for offensive holding, though, setting Houston back 10. Woods pulls in a 32-yard grab to make up for it though to get into Jets territory.

9:15 p.m. โ€” JETS PUNT. New York gets another lucky break with a beautiful punt from Morestead, pinning Houston at their own two with just under 12 minutes before half.

Notably, New York’s Thomas is questionable to return with a knee issue and Reed is being evaluated for a concussion.

9:10 p.m. โ€” TEXANS RECOVER A FUMBLE AND SCORE! Rodgers throws it to Conklin who fumbles, and Hewitt returns it for the touchdown. However, the play is overturned, as the TE failed to pull it fully in before dropping the ball. The Jets maintain possession at their own 23 with fourth-and-six to go.

9:06 p.m. โ€” TEXANS PUNT. The nightmare for New York continues as Green goes down after Stroud scrambles for three then throws a bad toss to Metchie to go three-and-out, wasting a forced turnover to keep the score even.

9:03 p.m. โ€” TOUCHBACK FOR HOUSTON! The touchdown is overturned as Corley dropped it at the one, giving the Texans the ball back at their own 20 with a fresh set of downs and 15 minutes on the clock. Mixon gets the first carry for two.

9 p.m. โ€” JETS SCORE FIRST! With the first play of the frame, Corley scores his first touchdown on a pitch and run from the 21. However, it appears as though he may have dropped the ball before crossing the goal line, and the play is under review.

First quarter: Texans 0, Jets 0

8:57 p.m. โ€” Wilson makes an eight yard catch for the first down before Hall is stuffed at the line of scrimmage by Fatukasi. However, he is called for a facemask, and the Jets get a fresh set of downs again at the Texans 19 as the quarter ends with the scored locked at zeros.

8:55 p.m. โ€” With just over 30 seconds from the two minute mark, Rodgers finds Hall on the left sideline who is taken down by To’oTo’o for a loss of two before Adams makes a catch for five to set up second-and-12. Anderson returns to the game for New York as well.

8:53 p.m. โ€” Good news from the Jets sideline as Anderson is up and moving, and Hall takes the first carry of the drive for eight yards before tacking on another 16 for a first down and more.

8:50 p.m. โ€” TEXANS PUNT. The Jets defense continues to impress, sacking Stroud for the third time in 10 minutes for a loss of four to set up third-and-long. Stroud can’t find the first down despite a nine yard gain from Dell, and Townsend punts it for Gipson at the Jets 31.

8:47 p.m. โ€” A 17 yard gain from Mixon is erased by a Stover holding on Oliver, stuffing a first down run. Reed was injured during the play but heads quickly to the sideline as the Texans get it at their own 12 on second-and-long.

8:45 p.m. โ€” PUNT JETS. New York gives the ball back to Houston after a fumble recovery, and the Texans get the ball back on their own 31 after Sims muffs the kick on the sideline. Mixon takes the first handoff for seven with just over six minutes in the first.

8:43 p.m. โ€” Anderson goes off limping with help from trainers with an apparent ankle injury, though confirmation is to be determined. Hall gets the ball for one before Rodgers dishes two bad passes to Adams and Williams to the tune of more boos from the crowd.

8:41 p.m. โ€” Hall takes the first handoff from Rodgers with 7:33 on the clock, and he gets six before fumbling thanks to a Hewitt tackle. Hall recovers it, but not before Anderson goes down on the play for Houston.

8:39 p.m. โ€” JETS FUMBLE RECOVERY! Mixon takes another carry to the 11 for a first down before Ogunbowale gets a handoff and is stuffed by Williams.

On the verge of their first scoring play, Stroud loses the ball for the Texans as New York’s Williams knocks it out, and McDonald hops on top of it for the turnover.

8:33 p.m. โ€” Jets Charles makes a fatal mistake on fourth-and-21, roughing Townsend on the punt for a 15-yard penalty to set Houston up at the New York 49 with a fresh set of downs and 10 minutes to go in the quarter.

Mixon takes two handoffs for nine yards and Thomas is injured on the play, prompting an injury timeout on third-and-one from the 40. Neither team has scored.

8:30 p.m. โ€” Stroud faces the same fate as Rodgers, handing it off to Mixon for a two yard gain before he’s sacked for a loss of eight to set up third-and-long. Then, the QB tries to find Dell up the middle for the first down, but he can’t pull it in.

8:27 p.m. โ€” JETS PUNT. New York’s first drive lasts all of 60 seconds for a loss of nine before Rodgers goes three-and-out and Morstead boots it away. The Texans start on their own 47 but face a five yard penalty after Tunsil false starts for first-and-long.

8:25 p.m. โ€” Rodgers’ first attempt goes to Adams for an incompletion, and the same happens next to Hall. The QB is already facing boos from his own fans with the Jets backed up inside their own 10 with a sack at the one by Autry.

8:23 p.m. โ€” TEXANS PUNT. The drive ends for Houston as Stroud can’t find the TE on third-and-four, and the Jets take over on their own 11 after a deep Townsend punt. Rodgers will take the field with 12:44 in the quarter.

8:21 p.m. โ€” Stroud keeps the drive alive with his first successful pass of the night to Dell, who makes the grab for 16 yards and a first down to the Texans 37. The QB throws his third bad pass deep right but finds Schultz on the next play for a six yard gain.

8:20 p.m. โ€” The most penalized team in the NFL, the Jets are flagged again for an offside on Williams as Mixon is stuffed for no gain. Stroud’s second attempt is incomplete to Woods, and the Texans have third-and-five to go.

8:15 p.m. โ€” Notably, Rodgers wasn’t present at the coin toss for the second week in a row as the Jets win and defer. Stroud will get the ball on the Texans 16 after a holding penalty causes a loss of 10 on the return. He throws his first pass to Stover who can’t bring it in.

Pregame

8:10 p.m. โ€” New York is in the holiday spirit as the Jets take the field.

8:05 p.m. โ€” The Jets are blacking things out with all dark uniforms while the Texans go all white in a high contrast clash. There are 10 minutes between each roster and a intra-conference clash.

7:55 p.m. โ€” With 20 minutes to go until kickoff, tonight’s forecast in East Rutherford is a pleasant 71 degrees at gametime. The line has moved to -3 in New York’s favor, and the TNF panel largely agrees.

7:35 p.m. โ€” Another impressive Halloween showing, this Jets fan showed up to tonight’s game as Jeff Ulbrich and met…Jeff Ulbrich.

7:30 p.m. โ€” The Sporting News has been tracking free agency for both teams closely over the past week. Here are some headlines before kickoff.

7:05 p.m. โ€” Both teams have released their inactive lists for the night. The Jets will be without several key players, including WR Allen Lazard, DL Leki Fotu and K Greg Zuerleinโ€”all of whom are on the IR. LB and defensive captain C.J. Mosley, G Alijah Vera-Tucker and safeties Tony Adams and Ashtyn Davis are all out with injuries.

Aside from the obvious void left by Diggs’ absence, the Texans will be without Collins as well in the passing game. However, they are getting To’oTo’o back in the secondary which is a positive development with the loss of ILB Azeez Al-Shaair to a knee injury.

6:30 p.m. โ€” As 2.5-point favorites, the Jets are looking to improve upon a below-average start and capitalize on a playoff-worthy roster. While the game isn’t particularly intriguing in the grand scheme of things, the quarterback matchup is one to watch given Rodgers and Strouds’ respective differences.

6:10 p.m. โ€” With just over two hours before kickoff, players are already in the Halloween spirit. Here are some of the best costumes from both teams’ entrances to MetLife Stadium.
