Many of the top golfers on the PGA Tour were praising the Oak Hill Country Club ahead of the 2023 PGA Championship. They may have come off the course Thursday — and early Friday — feeling a bit differently about it.

Oak Hill proved to be an extremely tough test for the world’s best golfers, as one would expect in a major tournament. Just 26 golfers logged under-par scores for the round — which was delayed nearly two hours by frost and had to be finished on Friday morning — while several of the world’s best players were as many as five shots over par.

In particular, Jon Rahm (6-over), Tyrrell Hatton (7-over) and Sungjae Im (10-over) shot shockingly high scores on the course and showed frustration during the round. Meanwhile, few were able to tame the course, but Bryson DeChambeau was among them.

The slimmed-down LIV Golf star was the solo leader after Round 1, card a 4-under score and repeatedly hitting the fairway while getting plenty of distance off the tee. It was a strong, consistent showing from DeChambeau and one that will lead many to believe that he can contend at the
PGA Championship and battle for his second career major championship.

DeChambeau’s lead was just one stroke after the round. His LIV Golf rival Dustin Johnson and World No. 2 golfer Scotty Scheffler are in hot pursuit of him entering Round 2, and so too are Eric Cole and Corey Conners.

And if conditions at Oak Hill are a bit easier on Friday than they were Thursday, more of the top golfers in the world should be able to work into the mix and make this major highly competitive.

PGA Championship live updates, highlights from Thursday’s Round 1

(All times Eastern.)

8:15 a.m. — And Patrick Rodgers makes a short par put on the 18th and that will put a bow on Round 1 action. Bryson DeChambeau is the leader through 18 holes while Dustin Johnson, Corey Conners, Scottie Scheffler and Eric Cole are one shot off the lead. It’s still anyone’s game playing on the ever-difficult Oak Hill Country Club East course.

8:07 a.m. — Round 1 play is finishing up on the course, and Eric Cole has dropped from 5-under to 3-under. That puts Bryson DeChambeau back in first place while Cole is among four tied for second with his round in the books.

8:30 p.m. — They are done for the day at Oak Hill, so Cole will finish his first round tomorrow with the lead in hand. Thanks to some late struggles by Johnson and Scott, DeChambeau is in sole possession of second at -4.

8:14 p.m. — We have a new standalone leader: 34-year-old Eric Cole.

8:02 p.m. — Eric Cole, making his first PGA Championship appearance, is now tied atop the leaderboard with DeChambeau, Johnson, and Scott.

7:53 p.m. — Tom Kim is putting his body on the line!

7:39 p.m. — Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott are both now tied with DeChambeau at 4-under.

7:18 p.m. — Thomas Pieters and Dustin Johnson have both moved within one stroke of the lead. Pieters is up to five birdies today.

7:11 p.m. — Impressive birdie by Max Homa, who’s trying to bounce back from a four-bogey day.

6:35 p.m. — Scott and his very interesting outfit are back to 3-under after a birdie on the 10th hole.

6:15 p.m. — Nice putt from Dustin Johnson, who’s putting himself in position at 1-under through eight holes.

6:10 p.m. — Scott loses a bit of his momentum with a bogey on the 9th hole. He falls back to two strokes behind DeChambeau.

5:56 p.m. — Adam Scott birdies the 8th hole and is now one stroke off the lead at 3-under. He has plenty of time to put himself at the top of this leaderboard, though he’ll be coming up on a tough stretch of holes later on.

5:28 p.m. — Justin Rose is the latest player to birdie twice in his first three holes. A strong start for the former U.S. Open champion.

5:01 p.m. — Xander Schauffele has gotten off to a nightmarish start, with two bogeys and one double bogeys in his first three holes. He’s now +4 through four.

4:46 p.m. — Sepp Straka is on the move! A massive drive for Straka sets up his third birdie of the day and has him one stroke off the lead through seven holes.

4:31 p.m. — DeChambeau’s day is done, and he’s still the standalone leader at 4-under.

4:23 p.m. — Quite a drive by Adam Scott, who’s now at 1-under par after three holes.

4:05 p.m. — Rahm’s difficult day was the worst opening round by the reigning Masters champion since 2014.

3:49 p.m. — Bryson DeChambeau is in front at 4-under.

3:33 p.m. — We’ve seen a couple players birdie twice on their first three holes today, and Sepp Straka is the latest. He’s 2-under through three.

3:26 p.m. — Rory McIlroy’s day is done. He ends up shooting 1 over after a slow start. He is very much in this tournament, however, considering how few players are shooting under par.

3:19 p.m. — Here’s something you may have missed earlier: Bryson DeChambeau hit a wayward second shot on the 18th hole. It went over to the tee where PGA professional Kenny Pigman was preparing to hit. He was OK and DeChambeau checked on him, but it’s rare to see this type of miss, even from a guy like DeChambeau.

3:09 p.m. — Scheffler just missed a birdie at the ninth hole as he finished up his day. The shot lipped out. He leaves the course having carded a 3-under and the first bogey-free major round of his career. He is the clubhouse leader and is tied with Keegan Bradley, Corey Conners and Bryson DeChambeau for first.

3:05 p.m. — Jon Rahm is having a round that is almost a direct contrast to his first round at the Masters. At Augusta, Rahm double-bogeyed the first hole but then proceeded to play spotless the rest of the way en route to a 7-under 65. Today, he started with a birdie but has bogeyed six times since. Through 15 holes, he is 5 over par.

2:46 p.m. — What a shot by Bradley! He’s now in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Conners and Scheffler.

2:29 p.m. — Corey Conners is at the top of the leaderboard after a 15th hole birdie. He’s at least two strokes ahead of everyone other than Hovland.

2:15 p.m. — Now some of the birdies are starting to roll in. Conners and Hovland have moved into a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at -3, while Bradley and DeChambeau are now one stroke off the lead.

1:57 p.m. — Major missed opportunity to pull within a stroke of the lead for Justin Thomas, who settles for par at the 4th hole. Meanwhile, Scheffler converts a two-strike birdie and moves to 2-under.

1:50 p.m. — Scottie Scheffler has a big chance to move to 2-under on the 5th hole.

1:48 p.m. — Rahm is now six shots off the lead after a bogey on the 2nd hole. A nice save, but he’s quickly falling behind on Day 1.

1:43 p.m. — Fox is now at the top of the leaderboard by himself after a birdie on 14.

1:41 p.m. — It’s been a rough day for Rory McIlroy, but he did a terrific job saving this one.

1:28 p.m. — Theegala falls out of the lead after a bogey on 13. This course has been a slog as the day rolls on, with only Ryan Fox and Corey Conners better than 1-under at this point.

1:24 p.m. — Impressive from Shane Lowry…

1:17 p.m. — Rahm bogeys three consecutive holes and sees his odds tank from +550 to +1400. He’s sitting at +2 through nine holes.

1:11 p.m. — Major movement on the leaderboard: Higa double-bogies the 6th hole and falls out of the lead. Theegala was briefly a standalone leader, but his own bogey leaves him in a tie atop the leaderboard with Ryan Fox.

1:00 p.m. — Sahith Theegala, who played his way to a top-10 finish at the Masters, is now part of a three-way tie for the lead after a birdie on the 11th hole.

12:46 p.m. — Impressive birdie by Kurt Kitayama, who is now even on the day.

12:38 p.m. — What a shot by Viktor Hovland! He’s birdied three consecutive holes to go from +2 to -1.

12:20 p.m. — Bradley is now tied for the lead after a third birdie in four holes.

12:03 p.m. — Now it’s Keegan Bradley’s turn to birdie two of his first three holes and jump to second on the leaderboard. Higa is holding strong so far at 3-under.

11:43 a.m. — As more golfers tee off, there is still a serious logjam behind Higa and Terren with 15 players sitting at 1-under including Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Scottie Scheffler, and last year’s champion Justin Thomas.

11:33 a.m. — Callum Terren birdies two of his first three holes to move to second on the leaderboard.

11:21 a.m. — Excellent stroke by Beau Hossler, though he’s otherwise struggled today at +2 through five holes.

11:15 a.m. — Picking up where he left off: Masters champion Jon Rahm birdies his first hole of the day. He’s one of 12 tied for second at 1-under.

10:20 a.m. — Kazuki Higa is red-hot out of the gate. He parred the first hole but has since made four consecutive birdies to get to 4-under par. He currently maintains a two-stroke lead on Scott Stallings; those two are the only golfers currently playing that are multiple strokes under par.

9:45 a.m. — The first contender for shot of the day is Scott Stallings, who eagled his first hole of the day (the 10th).

9:05 a.m. — After a delay of nearly two hours, play is underway at Oak Hill.

7:36 a.m. — The first starting time is now set for 8:50 a.m. ET after the frost delay.
