“Dallas! Stars! Dallas! Stars!”

There’s no questioning which team scores when the Stars light the lamp. The Dallas fans at American Airlines Center erupt into chants of the team name following a goal scored by their club.

The Stars are in the midst of a deep postseason run in the 2023 playoffs, and their arena has been rocking. Dallas has one of the most unique goal songs in the NHL, as the tune was created specifically for the team.

While the song has been associated with the team for years, only within the last decade has it been utilized to celebrate a Stars goal.

The Sporting News has the details on the Stars’ goal song and its history.

What is the Stars’ goal song?

The Stars’ goal song is “Puck Off” by Pantera, a heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas.

It is one of the few goal songs in the NHL that was specifically created for the team. While the song has been used as Dallas’ goal song for the last 10 years, the tune has been around since 1999.

The Abbott brothers, Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell, were big fans of the Stars, hanging out regularly with some of the players from the team in the ’90s.

Ahead of the 1999 playoffs, the Stars and the band members were discussing a potential tune that could be created by Pantera for the Stars. The Abbotts went back to the studio and laid down the basics from the track and got the song back to Craig Ludwig, a defenseman on Dallas.

Not only did the team love the song, it became a rallying cry for the Stars in their run to the Stanley Cup Final. Dallas went on to defeat Buffalo in the finals for the franchise’s first Stanley Cup win, with Pantera blasting the entire way.

It did not become the goal song for the team until 14 years later, but it has been associated with the Dallas club for nearly two decades.

Stars goal song history, timeline

There have not been many goal songs in the Stars’ franchise history.

When the organization was still in Minnesota as the North Stars, Gary Glitter’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll (Part 2)” was used as the team’s goal song. It carried over to Dallas when the franchise relocated to Texas in 1992.

The song was used for another two decades as a celebration tune. It wasn’t until 2011 that the Stars altered the goal song, going with Locksley’s “The Whip” for two seasons.

Ahead of the 2013-14 season, the team elected to take the Pantera song and make it the goal song. While the tune had been around for nearly 15 years, it was never used as the goal song. Now, it’s a staple at American Airlines Center.
