The Gateway made a great impression on NASCAR fans in its inaugural Cup Series race las year. Can it repeat that feat in 2023?
Joey Logano captured last year’s iteration of the Enjoy Illinois 300, perfectly executing a slide job in the race’s last moments to nab his second victory of the Cup Series season. It was a sign of what was to come for the Team Penske star, who cruised to a second career Cup Series title off the back of his aggressive streak.
The 2023 season hasn’t been quite as prolific for Logano. He’s holding onto a playoff spot at the moment. But those victories that proved so commonplace in 2022 have proved more difficult to find. He’s finished outside the Top-15 in four of his last five points races, failing to make much of a dent, especially when compared to the blazing speeds posted by his 23XI Racing and Hendrick Motorsports counterparts.
Teammate Ryan Blaney took the checkered flag at Charlotte, so it’s not as if Penske doesn’t have speed. And Logano’s one of the sport’s greatest ever drivers, the sort of effervescent talent that can make magic in the most difficult situations. Still, it’s unusual to see such a talented driver toil for so long. Perhaps this is the week for him to get back to his best. He’s proven he can get it done on Gateway’s slick asphalt before.

2:17 p.m.: Some interesting context on Elliott’s suspension from NASCAR president Steve Phelps. Looks like NASCAR didn’t want to get caught in a double standard between Elliott and Bubba Wallace.
Steve Phelps to me yesterday on suspending Elliott: “It would be difficult to have a conversation with Denny or Bubba or someone else and say, ‘Hey, it was not OK for Bubba to do it and it’s OK for Chase to do it. … We hate it but it’s a call we needed to make.”
