Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton scored 27 minutes into his Brazil debut and Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Jr converted a late penalty as the Selecao won for the first time since the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 4-1 victory over spirited Guinea in Barcelona.
Against a side 76 places below them in FIFA’s standings, third-ranked Brazil scored twice in three first-half minutes at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium, Joelinton prodding in from close range before Madrid’s Rodrygo latched on to a pass from Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Richarlison and produced a composed finish.
Guinea manager Kaba Diawara, who played for clubs including Arsenal and Paris St-Germain as a player, had spoken of his desire for his team to earn a positive result, and they hit back when lone striker Serhou Guirassy – who will join Stuttgart from Rennes in July – evaded Marquinhos to nod in a 36th-minute reply.
On a night when Brazil played the first half in black shirts as part of an anti-racism initiative, they re-established their two-goal lead two minutes into the second half when Madrid defender Eder Militao glanced in a cross from West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta.
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson denied Guinea substitute Jose Kante from close range as part of a smart double save before Vinicius Jr – the subject of sickening racist abuse during several matches in Spain – converted a penalty three minutes from time.
As welcome as Vinicius Jr’s goal was on an occasion when players and fans united against discrimination, the 22-year-old was also a little fortunate to see his strike go in via Ibrahima Kone’s body as the goalkeeper dived the correct way.
The victory was Brazil’s first under interim head coach Ramon Menezes, who succeeded Tite following the manager’s departure in the aftermath of their defeat on penalties to Croatia in the World Cup quarterfinals.
Brazil are next in competitive action when they face Bolivia and Peru in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
Guinea suffered their second defeat in four days to go with their 2-1 defeat to Egypt on Wednesday, when they had held the lead in Marrakech.
Diawara’s players impressed with their willingness to attack the five-time World Cup winners and are on the brink of reaching the Africa Cup of Nations in January ahead of their final two qualification matches for the tournament.

Brazil vs Guinea live updates, highlights from international friendly
FULLTIME: Brazil 4-1 Guinea
The final whistle blows and the two coaches embrace! Guinea will be proud of their efforts tonight, repeatedly threatening the five-time World Cup winners and deservedly scoring a goal of their own.
Brazil, though, were hard to stop when they hit their free-flowing best and could have scored more than four. In wilting conditions, both teams deserve credit for an absorbing game containing plenty of action at either end!
90+2 mins: Brazil 4-1 Guinea
Vinicius Junior makes way and applauds the crowd on a night when a number of important gestures were made to support the Real Madrid man after a season when he has repeatedly experienced racism, as well as making the wider point that discrimination has no place in football or society.
He makes way dripping in sweat, having scored that late penalty.
89 mins: Brazil 4-1 Guinea
Guinea make Ederson work again, albeit not too vigorously. Then Brazil substitute Pedro has a sight of goal inside the penalty area but can’t get away from his marker, digging a shot into Ibrahima Kone’s arms.
Three minutes of added time will be played.
87 mins: GOAL – Brazil 4-1 Guinea (Vinicius Junior)
Oof! The Real Madrid attacker is very fortunate with this penalty. He hits it to goalkeeper Ibrahima Kone’s right, and the goalkeeper guesses the correct way – but the speed of the shot means it sneaks under the goalkeeper’s body via a strong touch.
Kone, understandably, is frustrated.
85 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea – PENALTY TO BRAZIL
Brazil substitute Malcom tries to rush on to a through ball inside the penalty area and is brought down by Issiaga Sylla as the defender brushes past him slightly too late, receiving a booking for his trouble.
Vinicius Junior will take this!
83 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Now Richarlison makes way. Then Vinicius Junior shows electric skill, dancing and shuffling in front of his markers before cutting inside and slamming a shot just wide.
81 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Real Madrid livewire Rodrygo signs shirts flung on top of the Brazil bench after making way for Malcom. His 30th-minute goal put his team two goals ahead for the first time tonight.
78 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Brazil have the ball in the Guinea penalty area and appear to be toying with the defence but can’t apply the finishing touch, Richarlison heavily involved with his usual quick feet.
77 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Guinea go close! Ederson keeps Jose Kante’s shot from a tight angle at close range out with his legs as part of a smart double save.
75 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita – now with Bundesliga team Werder Bremen – makes way after a gruelling shift as Guinea captain.
72 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Guinea are preparing to take their total number of substitutions to five. They won’t give up a result here easily, coach Kaba Diawara – a former player for clubs including Arsenal and PSG – speaking beforehand about how they wanted to add a positive scoreline to an impressive performance.
69 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
The tempo of the game has perhaps slowed a little in Barcelona, with Brazil looking comfortable to keep the ball at the back.
They’re on course for their first win of the calendar year and since that 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal defeat on penalties to Croatia.
67 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
It looks like there will be plenty more substitutions on the way for Brazil. Their entire bench seems to be strenuously warming up.
65 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Both teams ring the changes for the first time as the midway point of the first half approaches. For Brazil, Lucas Paqueta and Joelinton make way for Bruno Guimaraes and Raphael Veiga.
62 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Guinea have given a fine account of themselves tonight. They don’t look like a team 76 places below Brazil in FIFA’s rankings.

55 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea

Casemiro has his head in his hands after a late tackle on Francois Kamano that leaves the attacker, who’d been surging forward, in a heap.
53 mins: Brazil 3-1 Guinea
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson comes out to claim a cross, stopping Antoine Conte from potentially profiting. He then bowls the ball out to try to launch an attack down the left.

47 mins: GOAL – Brazil 3-1 Guinea (Eder Militao)
Brazil’s renewed threat early in the half pays off! They win a freekick in a promising position near the penalty area, working the ball out to Lucas Paqueta in the right channel, who whips a ball in front of the far post.
Eder Militao rises in front of Issiaga Sylla, who set up Guinea’s goal, and glances a powerful header in. That two-goal lead is restored!
46 mins: Brazil 2-1 Guinea
No changes at the break. There’s a party atmosphere as the sides re-emerge, Brazil immediately going on the attack.
HALFTIME: Brazil 2-1 Guinea
After a quiet start, this has become a thoroughly entertaining game of football! Brazil fans might have thought they’d cruise to victory after those goals, but Guinea said they wanted to show what they are about tonight, and they’d already gone some way to doing so before that deserved reply.
Joelinton has the distinction of being interviewed by Spanish TV on the pitch while a light show goes on.
45 mins: Brazil 2-1 Guinea
There will be two minutes of added time. Ibrahima Kone puts the ball down for a goal kick. Naby Keita and Casemiro have cordial words with one another.
In the crowd, someone holds up a shirt which, with limited Spanish, you’d imagine is asking Richarlison for his shirt.

36 mins: Brazil 2-1 Guinea
That was a lovely goal from Guinea, who haven’t been unduly perturbed by falling two goals behind.
Issiaga Sylla broke free inside the penalty area on the left and chipped a cross onto the head of Serhou Girassy in front of goal, who got in front of Marquinhos to nod in!

30 mins: GOAL – Brazil 2-0 Guinea (Rodrygo)
Two in three minutes! Richarlison performs a piece of telling trickery on the right, allowing Rodrygo to break free inside the penalty area and curl in a composed finish. Brazil are cruising after breaking down Guinea!
28 mins: Brazil 1-0 Guinea
After a fairly lengthy check, the goal stands! Joelinton won’t score many easier goals than that: A free-kick from the right caused confusion inside the Guinea penalty area, allowing Casemiro to almost stab in on the line.
As it was, the ball fell to his fellow Premier League player, allowing the Newcastle star to nudge over the line and wheel away to celebrate.
27 mins: GOAL – Brazil 1-0 Guinea (Joelinton)
But there’s a VAR check…
25 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
Morgan Guilavogui tries to burst onto a through ball on the right for Guinea and is deemed fractionally offside. Then Rodrygo wants a penalty for a challenge in the opposite penalty area, and does not receive his wish.
22 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea

16 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
Guinea try to press Brazil deep inside their own half, Marquinhos responding by spreading play elegantly from near his own corner flag on the left. The Selecao patiently build another attack.

11 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
Rodrygo gees up the crowd with both arms after bursting forward on the right, entering the penalty area and winning a corner off Issiaga Sylla.
8 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
Rennes forward Serhou Guirassy, who’s playing alone up front for Guinea tonight, has Guinea’s first chance shortly after Ibrahima Kone advances to deny Ayrton for Brazil.
Guirassy is free on the edge of the penalty area in a central position, lofting his shot clear of the crossbar.
6 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
Tottenham striker Richarlison has tried to bring the ball down in a dangerous area two or three times during the past minute, failing to control possession.
Then Ibrahima Kone comes out and heads a long ball clear.
3 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
Brazil manager Ramon Menezes is sipping from a bottle of water on the touchline. The referee checks the firmness of the match ball.
2 mins: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
This has been a composed start from Guinea, who’ve attempted to mount an early attack down the left. Their red shirts, yellow shorts and green socks are a striking combination.
1 min: Brazil 0-0 Guinea
The players took the knee before kickoff, with some choosing to sit as they took an anti-racism stance. Now the action begins!
2 mins to KO: The players are out and the national anthems are played! Brazil, in their black shirts, give a stirring, passionate rendition of their number.
20 mins to KO: The experienced Danilo emphasised during the week that Brazil have been taking this game very seriously and carrying out video analysis on their opponents despite it being a friendly.
“We are used to a level of professionalism and demand here,” he said. “It is clear that the preparation has to be as if it were a decisive game, because the level of demand of the Brazilian team is always very big.”
40 mins to KO: Brazil say they have carried out an “intense” training camp with a “harmonious” atmosphere. “I hope we win again, play well again and are in control,” interim coach Ramon Menezes said.

2 hours to KO: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ coverage of Brazil vs Guinea! The third-ranked team in the world may be facing opponents 76 places below them this evening, but the African side are in better form after beating Ethiopia twice in four days in March and taking the lead before losing to Egypt on Wednesday, a result that still leaves them on the brink of Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
Brazil aren’t really in any form. Their only game since their surprise 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal exit to Croatia in December — a result prompting former boss Tite’s exit — was a 2-1 defeat to Morocco in Tangier in March, when Manchester United’s Casemiro scored for them in between the hosts’ goals. Can the five-time World Cup winners earn their first victory of 2023 tonight?
