Contrary to what most expected when schedules were released for the 2024 season, Thursday’s matchup between the Broncos and Saints is not a game between veteran quarterback Derek Carr and rookie starter Bo Nix.

Rather, the youngster will face off against his fellow draftee Spencer Rattler, who was selected by New Orleans in the fifth round after Nix was taken 12th overall by Denver. A starting quarterback for both Oklahoma and South Carolina during his college career, Rattler replaced Carr after he went down with an oblique injury in Week 5.

Nix was a member of the SEC at Auburn when Rattler was at Oklahoma while the Sooners were still members of the Big 12, and they barely missed each other when the former transferred to Oregon in 2022, the same year the latter got his start in Columbia.

Thursday, they finally get their chance to compete in New Orleans, a matchup that also marks Broncos head coach Sean Payton’s first game against his former team. In 16 seasons with the Saints, Payton took his squad, headed almost his entire tenure by legendary quarterback Drew Brees, to three NFC Championship Games.

That included a Super Bowl victory in 2010 when Brees upset Payton Manning’s Colts 31-17 for the franchise’s first title. Now, Payton leads Manning’s second team after a 2023 trade between the franchises, seeking his second Super Bowl win and Denver’s fourth overall.

Nix & Co. enter the matchup at an even 3-3 through Week 6, favored to beat 2-4 New Orleans in a close game. Here’s everything to know about Broncos vs. Saints, including live scores, updates, and highlights from the NFL “Thursday Night Football” contest.

10:25 p.m. — Another penalty is called on the Saints, this time on Young for false start, and Rattler’s next pass to Tipton only goes four seven. On second-and-long from his own 43, Rattler finds Wilson short up the middle for an 11-yard gain to the Broncos 46, bringing up third-and-seven.

10:23 p.m. — Rattler completes another pass to Tipton for eight, then Williams takes it again for 13 to the Broncos 49. Just as the drive is beginning to come to fruition, Moreau draws a flag for offensive holding pushing the team back to first-and-twenty.

10:21 p.m. — Rattler tries again, this time to Wilson, who takes it for nine before he’s pushed out of bounds at the 28. On third-and-one Williams takes a carry for two and a first down.

10:20 p.m. — With that, Williams scores his first two touchdowns of the season and is now the team’s second-leading scorer behind Nix, tied with Sutton. Lutz’s kick goes to the Saints four, and Jackson returns it to the 19. Rattler’s first pass is incomplete to Johnson.

Broncos 26, Saints 3

10:15 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN BRONCOS! The points keep pouring on, thanks again to Williams who runs it in for his second score of the night. Lutz’s kick is good, and Denver leads by 23 with 5:53 in the third.

10:13 p.m. — Another handoff goes to Williams for two yards to the 38 before Nix takes it himself for five and a first down.

10:12 p.m. — Nix’s first throw of the drive goes to Krull for 22 yards to the Saints 47. He then pitches it to McLaughlin, who runs it for seven before he’s pushed out of bounds to set up second-and-three.

10:10 p.m. — SAINTS PUNT. New Orleans go three-and-out once again and couldn’t even make it past the line of scrimmage. Hayball’s punt goes 40 yards to the 31, where it is fair caught by Wood.

Broncos 19, Saints 3

10:07 p.m. — FIELD GOAL BRONCOS! Lutz’s fourth kick is good from 38, and Denver’s lead is at a strong 16 points with 10:25 remaining in the third. Nix’s last drive was seven plays for 46 yards in 3:45.

10:05 p.m. — Nix passes it short to Franklin for a four yard gain to set up third-and-five at the 20, then he looks for Humphrey in the end zone who can’t pull it in. He is well covered by Taylor, who pokes it out at the last second.

10:03 p.m. — McLaughlin takes a handoff and explodes to the Saints 25 for a 21-yard gain and a first down. Nix’s next handoff goes to Williams who is stopped at the line of scrimmage.

10:01 p.m. — Williams gets the first handoff from Nix, and he jukes a tackle for a 13-yard gain to the Broncos 47. Estime comes in for the next play and takes it for seven to set up second-and-three.

9:59 p.m. — PUNT SAINTS. A 39 second three-and-out is not the way the Saints expected to begin the second, but that’s what happened nonetheless. Hayball punts it to the Denver 22, where it is recovered by Mims for 12 yards.

9:57 p.m. — Rattler’s first pass of the half is incomplete to Wilson before he finds Kamara for a three-yard gain to the 33. On third-and-seven, Rattler attempts to find Johnson at the marker, but he is well covered by Mathis and can’t pull it in.

9:55 p.m. — The Saints will receive the second half kickoff, which Lutz boots deep into the end zone for a touchback. New Orleans will start with the ball on their own 30.

Half: Broncos 16, Saints 3

9:42 p.m. — Rattler finds Kamara up the middle for five yards to bring up third down, and the Saints call their final timeout with four seconds on the clock. Rattler kneels out the half and the team is booed off the field as both teams head to the locker room.

9:41 p.m. — Lutz kicks it for a touchback, and the Saints have 16 seconds to answer. Rattler’s first pass goes to Kamara, who is taken down at the line of scrimmage for a yard by McMillan. New Orleans takes its second timeout at the 31 with second-and-nine in front of it.

Broncos 16, Saints 3

9:40 p.m. — FIELD GOAL BRONCOS! Lutz hits his third of the night from 52 yards out to re-extend the lead to double-digits with under 20 seconds to go in the half.

9:38 p.m. — Nix scrambles yet again before tip toeing out of bounds just shy of the marker. Payton sends the field goal unit on with fourth-and-four and 21 seconds before half.

9:37 p.m. — Once again, Nix misses a target, this time looking for Mims up the right sideline. Mims turns back to late to make the catch, then on second down Nix takes it himself and slides around the Saints 37 before Denver calls a timeout with 27 seconds on the clock.

9:35 p.m. — Nix is nearly picked off by Mathieu, who has 35 career interceptions, but the ball goes right through his hands. On third down, Nix finds Mims on the right sideline who goes out of bounds for a fresh set of downs.

9:33 p.m. — Nix finds Krull up the middle for a first down and the clock continues to run. Nix is then faced with pressure and spikes it to the ground to bring up second down from the Denver 49.

9:31 p.m. — Mims takes the return from the end zone to the 28, then Nix passes it short to Williams who is pushed out-of-bounds at the 36. On second-and-two, Nix tries to find Vele up the middle but he can’t pull it in, bringing up third down.

Broncos 13, Saints 3

9:30 p.m. — FIELD GOAL SAINTS! Down 13, the Saints elect to kick a field goal after initially sending the offense onto the field. Grupe hits it up the middle from 35 and shaves the margin to 10 with 1:57 before halftime.

9:26 p.m. — Rattler’s pass out of the break goes short right to Moreau for six yards to set up fourth-and-five at the 17 as the clock expires to the two minute warning. The Saints drive so far has covered 62 yards on 10 plays.

9:24 p.m. — Rattler hands it off to Kamara deep in the backfield, and he is taken down by MacMillan for a loss of seven. On second-and-long, Rattler fires it to Tipton on the right sideline, and he is blasted by Moss to set up third-and-eleven with under 60 seconds before the two minute warning.

9:22 p.m. — Rattler pitches it to Kamara on second-and-four, and the RB runs into Jackson who takes him down at the line of scrimmage for a gain of two. Now third down at the 50, Rattler scrambles into a long run deep into Denver territory until he runs out of bounds around the 20.

9:20 p.m. — On fourth-and-inches, Rattler a handoff then floats it left to Johnson, who runs it forward for a first down and more to the Saints 42. The QB then finds Kamara on the right sideline for a short gain.

9:18 p.m. — Williams takes another handoff for two yards to bring up fourth-and-one at the 30. The RB has eight carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.

9:16 p.m. — In more bad news from the broadcast, Adebo was sent into the x-ray room with an air splint on his leg, usually indicative of a broken bone. Lutz’s kick goes into the end zone, but Jackson returns it to the 21. Kamara takes the first handoff for a gain of six, then Williams gets the Saints to the 28 to bring up third down.

Broncos 13, Saints 0

9:13 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN BRONCOS! Williams carries it in for the 8-yard score, putting Denver up 12-0 before Lutz hit the extra point. The Broncos lead by two scores with 7:30 remaining in the half.

9:11 p.m. — Nix comes back out after the injury timeout and finally makes a big pass up the right sideline to Franklin, who smokes McKinstry after he came in for Adebo. With a fresh set of downs on the Saints 19, Nix passes short to Humphry for nine yards to the eight.

9:08 p.m. — The cart has come out for Adebo, which is an unfortunate development for an already decimated Saints team. It is reported to look like a leg injury, but nothing is confirmed.

9:06 p.m. — On the last play, Saints defender Adebo was injured, leading to an injury timeout with 9:52 to go. Rattler is 4-7 with 54 yards so far, compared to Nix’s 63 yards on 8-12.

9:04 p.m. — Nix hands the second snap off to Williams, who explodes for 20 yards to the Denver 38. Estime runs for four to set up second-and-six before Nix passes it short left to Williams for a first down and more.

9:02 p.m. — PUNT SAINTS. Hayball comes out to punt and Wood receives it at the 13, returning it for a yard. Nix comes back out with 12:14 to go before half, and he scrambles on the first snap for a short gain.

9:01 p.m. — Rattler hits Johnson at the 45 before he is pushed out of bounds for third down. With five to go, Rattler misses Means and brings up fourth around midfield.

8:59 p.m. — Browning jumps into the neutral zone, and the Saints suddenly have a fresh set of downs at their own 40. Rattler’s next throw goes deep downfield toward Tipton who is tripped up on the run. He appeals for pass interference but no flag is thrown.

8:56 p.m. — New Orleans returns the kicks to the 35 where Rattler will begin attempting to even the score. He take a high snap and appears to control it, but he drops it and is unable to fully recover it before a Bronco defender knocks out the ball and returns it for a touchdown. However, the Saints are lucky as a penalty called on Jones nullified the play for another first down and five.

Broncos 6, Saints 0

8:54 p.m. — FIELD GOAL BRONCOS! Lutz hits a 32-yard kick and Denver leads by six with 13:24 in the half. Nix’s scoring drive was 10 plays and 42 yards, taking up just over five minutes off the clock.

8:52 p.m. — Nix fakes a handoff on third-and-one and under-throws a wide open Trautman inside the five. Now fourth down, Nix lines up under center and attempts to get the Saints to jump offsides, but he is unable to, prompting a delay of game and five yard penalty before Lutz comes out for another kick.

8:50 p.m. — Nix kicks off the second with a handoff to Williams for five more to the 12. On second down, Nix scrambles yet again and barrels into a Saints defender before going out of bounds inside the 10.

End of first quarter: Broncos 3, Saints 0

8:47 p.m. — Prior to Nix’s next pass, the Adebo is called for holding Sutton, which bumps the Broncos to the 29 with a fresh set of downs. Nix then goes short to Franklin for a 12-yard gain, all the way into the red zone as the clock winds down to end the quarter.

8:45 p.m. — On the Saints 44, Williams takes a handoff for seven yards before getting another for a first down to the 34 with just under a minute in the first.

8:43 p.m. — The fumble recovery is confirmed, and Nix’s first pass goes short to Krull for five yards to the 50. He hands it off to Williams who runs it for four and second-and-short. Nix takes it himself for two and the first down the next play.

8:41 p.m. — The play is under review, however it looks as though Barton got to Rattler before his arm moved forward in the passing motion. It was recovered by Alexander at the Denver 45, where the Broncos will regain possession with 3:40 in the quarter.

8:39 p.m. — FUMBLE RECOVERED BY DENVER. Rattler passes his first ball of the drive to Means, who makes the catch at the 50 for a first down. Rattler attempts to pass again, but the ball is knocked out. The Broncos get on top of it, and it is ruled a fumble recovery after some on-field confusion.

8:37 p.m. — Lutz’s kick goes for 66 yards into the end zone, but Jackson returns it to the 33. Kamara gets the first handoff of the drive and takes it for no gain before Miller takes the next one for eight to the 40 for third-and-two.

Broncos 3, Saints 0

8:34 p.m. — FIELD GOAL BRONCOS! Lutz hits a 46-yarder for the first points of the game, putting Denver up by three with 5:28 to go in the first. Nix is 5-8 through his first two drives, with 37 yards to show for it. He’s also rushed for 25 on three carries.

8:33 p.m. — Nix shovels one to McLaughlin who is smothered by Orji at the line of scrimmage for a loss of two, setting up third-and-six at the 31. The next snap goes to Nix who escapes pressure and finally exits on the left sideline at the 30 for fourth-and-three.

8:32 p.m. — Williams picks up a first down around the Saints 35 with a 10-yard run, then, with no huddle, Nix finds Williams at the 30 for second-and-five.

8:31 p.m. — The QB’s second pass goes to fellow Pac-12 rookie Vele out of Utah, who makes the catch for a 20 yard gain to the Saints 47. Nix’s next throw is caught at the 50 by Franklin who picks up two.

8:30 p.m. — Nix’s first pass goes short to Mims for a seven yard gain, then he hands it off to Walker, who takes it to the 33 for a first down.

8:29 p.m. — PUNT SAINTS. Hayball’s punt goes through the end zone and the Broncos start at their own 30.

8:28 p.m. — The QB’s second pass is incomplete deep right to Tipton, then his second goes to Wilson for seven yards. It wasn’t enough for a fresh set of downs, and the Saints went three-and-out as well with 10:32 remaining.

8:26 p.m. — Rattler begins his second drive as a starter with a big find at the 40 for a 32-yard gain, caught by Moreau. Kamara takes the next carry for one.

8:24 p.m. — PUNT BRONCOS. Dixon’s boot is fair caught by Fraboni inside the ten.

8:23 p.m. — An incompletion to Franklin brings up third-and-ten, then Nix is pushed back by pressure before throwing it away. The Broncos go three-and-out in their first drive,  a six-play, 24-yard effort lasting just over two minutes.

8:21 p.m. — Nix misses a wide open Krull with absolutely no Saints to be seen around him. The gain would have put the Broncos in the red zone, but they now sit on second down with 10 to go at the Saints 41.

8:19 p.m. — Nix takes the snap and rolls out right, hitting Franklin for a two yard gain. On second down,  Nix fakes the handoff to Williams then keeps it and runs for yet another first to the right sideline.

8:17 p.m. — Marvin Mims returns the opening kickoff for the Broncos to their own 35. Nix starts the drive with a scramble for a first down before sliding around the 50.
