An inter-conference matchup will wrap up the Sunday action in Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season.
The Vikings are set to host the Colts on “Sunday Night Football” this week, with both teams holding onto playoff aspirations halfway through the season. However, Indianapolis comes into this matchup having made a significant change recently.
Second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, who has dealt with injuries often early in his NFL career, has been benched for the team’s veteran, Joe Flacco. Richardson had seven interceptions in six games played so far this season. Flacco, who had already filled in as the Colts’ starter on multiple occasions, comes into Week 9 with just one interception against seven passing touchdowns.
The Colts are hoping their quarterback change will help boost an offense that’s averaging 21.9 points per game this season, which ranks just around the middle of the league. Indianapolis is 4-4 so far, good enough to be competing for an AFC Wild Card spot but not enough to keep up with the Texans (6-3) in the AFC South.
On the other side of things, the Vikings’ 2024 season has had two distinct runs. First, Minnesota opened the season on a 5-0 streak, defeating the Giants, 49ers, Texans, Packers and Jets to remain unbeaten. However, since then the Vikings have lost back-to-back contests against the Lions and Rams, and they’ll come into Sunday’s home game looking to get back on track.
Sam Darnold has found a career resurgence as Minnesota’s starting quarterback this season, with 1,610 passing yards and 14 touchdown passes in seven games. Already playing in a talented offense that includes wide receiver Justin Jefferson and running back Aaron Jones, Darnold is set to get another key weapon back in Week 9, as tight end TJ Hockenson appears to be set to return to the field after a season-ending injury in 2023.
While Indianapolis is searching for some momentum behind the 39-year-old Flacco, Minnesota is looking to get back to its winning ways and remain competitive in a crowded NFC North race.
