A strong argument can be made that quarterback Matthew Stafford never really got his due from the national media with the Detroit Lions, despite usually playing at a high level. That has no doubt changed since he won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, though.

But Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud wasn’t late to the party. In fact, he’s been a huge fan of Stafford’s for many years and admitted he has studied the veteran signal-caller.

He even went as far as to say that Stafford would have won multiple Super Bowl rings if he had the same situation that Aaron Rodgers had with the Green Bay Packers, which implies he thinks Stafford is better.

“Stafford, he’s another one. He might be up there with Brady and them,” Stroud said on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast. “No, that’s crazy. That’s crazy. Let me go back. I’m a student of the game. Stafford’s a dog. He’s a dog. You don’t understand. You’re saying that. That’s all I watch. I don’t watch nobody else. I watch Mahomes at times because Mahomes does some stuff that you can’t coach. Stafford, dog. He will beat you with the same thing every time. All that no-look stuff, I got that from (him). That’s one of my biggest — like, I’m a fan of his.”

“If you gave Matthew Stafford a chance like Aaron Rodgers had, I guarantee he might’ve had more rings, for sure. I’d say he’d have three, four. He’s tough as nails, bro.”

While a debate can certainly be had about who is better between Rodgers and Stafford, there is no denying that Stafford isn’t just some average quarterback, especially when it comes to his toughness.

It’s a shame Stafford never got over the hump to win even a playoff game with the Lions, but he wasn’t always in a great situation, either. Regardless, he’s the best quarterback in franchise history, although Jared Goff is challenging that.
