Howard University golf has skyrocketed from non-existent to the nation’s premier HBCU golf program in a matter of three years. That wouldn’t be possible without help from one familiar name: Stephen Curry.

Curry stepped in and helped jumpstart a program that had been shelved nearly five decades earlier, and the results have been better than anyone could’ve expected since Howard launched men’s and women’s golf in 2021.

The Bison’s story is still being written, but the accomplishments of the first three years are about to be put on display in ESPN’s “Why Not Us: Howard Golf.”

According to ESPN, the eight-part documentary “follows both men’s and women’s golf teams at Howard University as the student-athletes and their coaches navigate the challenges and triumphs of an emerging Division I program.”

Howard University golf documentary release date

“Why Not Us: Howard Golf” is set to premiere on Monday, Aug. 21, but not all episodes will be available on the same day. Here’s the schedule for the documentary’s release on ESPNU:

  • Aug. 21: Episodes 1-4, starting at 7 p.m. ET
  • Aug. 28: Episodes 5-6, starting at 7 p.m. ET
  • Sep. 4: Episodes 7-8, starting at 7 p.m. ET

In addition to new episodes, the third and fourth episodes will re-air on Aug. 28, and the fifth and sixth episodes will re-air on Sep. 4. All eight episodes will re-air Sept. 6 on ESPN2 starting at 7 p.m. ET.

As HBCU golf continues to emerge, no program has grown as rapidly as Howard’s. Howard’s men’s golf team dominated the PGA Works Collegiate Championship in only its third season, finishing 57 strokes ahead of the runner-up and claiming each of the top three spots in the individual competition.

“Why Not Us” captures the journey from the start of a previously shuttered program in 2021 to the achievements of 2023. With the exposure and attention that comes along with the documentary, Howard golf figures to continue growing.

Not only did Curry take the dramatic step of funding the program’s relaunch, but he is also an executive producer for the documentary and will help tell the story of Howard’s rise.
