The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up organized team activities (OTA) on Thursday with their final practice session of the month at their facility on West 56th Street.
With OTAs now behind the Colts, they will return to the field next week for mandatory minicamp. That will be the final time the team will be together before breaking for summer ahead of training camp.
The media will be present for all three minicamp practices June 4-6.
Here are the biggest takeaways from the final OTA practice for the Colts:
Indianapolis Colts OTAs: Biggest takeaways from Day 5
Anthony Richardson update
The electric quarterback was again taking all of the full-team reps with the first-team offense, proving the shoulder injury is well behind him. It’s vital that Richardson is showing no issues in handling his regular workload and that the velocity on his throws is still as strong as they were before the injury.
No concern for Jonathan Taylor’s absence
Taylor’s absence this time last year raised plenty of eyebrows. This time around? It’s not a concern at all. Head coach Shane Steichen told reporters after practice that Taylor was absent due to personal reasons and will be back for mandatory minicamp next week.
Michael Pittman Jr. held out
The Colts took the precautionary route with Pittman on Thursday, holding him out of practice after bumping knees with cornerback Jaylon Jones last week. Steichen told the media that holding Pittman out was merely a precaution and that there are no long-term concerns about the knee injury.
A big play from the rookie
While it seemed the offense had its struggles during team drills on Thursday, one rookie did make a highlight play. Second-round pick Adonai Mitchell had a “terrific over the shoulder grab,” according to Kevin Bowen of 1070 The Fan. Richardson and Mitchell also connected on a comebacker later in 11-on-11 drills.
Early leads in secondary competition
The Colts have two starting roles up for grabs in the secondary. The free safety position features a battle between third-year safeties Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas II while one of the cornerback positions on the boundary features competition between Dallis Flowers, Jaylon Jones and Darrell Baker Jr.
According to Kevin Bowen of 1070 The Fan, Cross and Jones appear to be leading their respective competitions.
