New York artist Jesse Malin has recruited a bunch of musicians for the new tribute album Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin. The album finds Bruce Springsteen, Spoon, the Hold Steady, Dinosaur Jr., Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello, the Wallflowers, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, the Kills’ Alison Mosshart, the late Wayne Kramer of MC5, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Tommy Stinson, Counting Crows, Susanna Hoffs, and more covering tracks from across Malin’s discography. Listen to Bleachers’ version of Glitter in the Gutter’s “Prisoners of Paradise” below.
Last year, Malin sustained a rare and sudden spinal stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Proceeds from the new album will go to his Sweet Relief fund.
Discussing Silver Patron Saints in a press release, Malin said, “As always in my songs, the themes are all there—transcendence, positivity and global unity through music. This is what I love to do, and I’m going to do everything I can to keep doing it.”
The musician added, “There’s a feeling of liberation that comes with this, but I don’t want to keep repeating myself either. My whole process—since I was 13—is to progress, evolve and challenge myself on each record. I really hope people in all parts of the world can relate to these songs, just the spectrum of emotions, overcoming by celebrating life through music and art.”
Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin is out September 20 (via Glassnote). Malin is also releasing a new live album, Chasing the Light, on June 21 (via Wicked Cool).
