Jets vs. Steelers live score, updates, highlights from NFL ‘Sunday Night Football’ game

This week’s Sunday night game has skyrocketed from an already intriguing matchup to one of the most anticipated of the season in less than seven days.

It all exploded Tuesday, with reports out of Steelers training that head coach Mike Tomlin was planning to give quarterback Russell Wilson first-team reps in anticipation of the veteran making his first start for Pittsburgh this weekend. Fourth-year slinger Justin Fields has been playing as Wilson deals with a calf injury he aggravated in the preseason.

The decision came as a surprise to some, with Fields having led the team to a 4-2 record so far, including wins over the Chargers, Broncos and Falcons through his first three games. Nevertheless, Wilson’s pedigree, including a 35-point Super Bowl victory over Peyton Manning’s Broncos in 2014, left little doubt he would be given a shot at the starting spot when healthy.

For the Jets, on the other hand, things are looking a little bit more clear. The same day the Steelers reopened their quarterback controversy, New York facilitated a highly anticipated blockbuster trade with the Raiders for star wide receiver Davante Adams. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers played with Adams for four years in Green Bay, and the duo were often considered one of the best pass-catching pairs in the league. 

Now, the two reunite in a different shade of green and a slightly more modern stadium with hopes of repeating the magic that had Adams averaging 119 receptions, 1,463 yards and 14.5 touchdowns per season as a Packer. 

The Jets (2-4) and Steelers (4-2) are a combined 1-5 through their last six games, with the only win coming last weekend in Pittsburgh’s 32-13 thrashing of Las Vegas. Adams was notably absent from the contest, however, missing the Raiders last three games with a hamstring injury.

Third quarter

10:40 p.m. — Boswell kicks it off to the 35 where Davis returns it. He slips on his own around the 26 for a 21 yard return. Hall takes the first handoff of the drive for five yards before Rodgers makes a big completion to Lazard for 15 more to the Jets 46.

Steelers 23, Jets 15

10:35 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN STEELERS! Play finally resumes after Newman is carted to the locker room for evaluation. On the one, Wilson sneaks it in himself and it is ruled a touchdown on the field before it goes under review. Boswell hits the extra point and Pittsburgh leads by eight with 7:15 to go.

10:33 p.m. — As more clips emerge of the hit that injured Newman, it appears likely he suffered a head injury of sorts as his neck snaps back when the back of his skull hits the ground on the fall. It is yet to be confirmed by the team, but updates will be added as they come out.

10:30 p.m. — With 7:22 remaining in the quarter, G Xavier Newman-Johnson went down on the sideline on the interception play. It’s unclear what the injury is, but the entire Jets team has surrounded him on the sideline as the cart is brought out.

10:24 p.m. — INTERCEPTION STEELERS! Boswell kicks it off to the Jets two where Gipson returns it to the 23. Rodgers then fires one incomplete to Hall to start the drive before throwing one down the sideline to Wilson. It comes off his hands and is caught by Bishop instead for his second pick of the night. He returns it all the way to the one before Adams takes him down, bringing up first-and-goal.

Steelers 16, Jets 15

10:22 p.m. — STEELERS TAKE THE LEAD! Boswell comes on and hits a 21 yard try, putting Pittsburgh up by one with 7:49 remaining. Wilson now has over 200 yards to Rodgers 184.

10:21 p.m. — Wilson fires two incompletions into the end zone to Pickens and Jefferson respectively, bringing up fourth down inside the five.

10:20 p.m. — Warren gets another first down inside the 10, getting the team to the three with a 10 yard gain. Wilson’s next handoff goes to Warren for no gain.

10:19 p.m. — Harris gets another handoff for four more to set up third-and-five, then Wilson finds Freiermuth at the Jets 13 with another absurd reception. The Steelers are within striking range and just need a field goal to take the lead.

10:17 p.m. — Pickens does it again, pulling in an unlikely pass under solid coverage by Oliver. He gets the Steelers to the Jets 39, where Wilson pitches it to Washington for a one yard gain. 

10:15 p.m. — Harris takes the first carry of the drive and powers forward for three yards. then, Wilson tries to find the RB again with no huddle but can’t, bringing up third-and-seven.

10:12 p.m. — JETS PUNT. Morstead boots it 37 yards to the Steelers 12, where Austin returns it for nine before he’s pushed out of bounds. There are just over 12 minutes remaining in the quarter and New York leads by two.

10:11 p.m. — Rodgers finds Wilson again for an eight yard gain into Steelers territory to bring up third-and-two. However, Rodgers can’t find Adams and it’s fourth down at about half field.

10:10 p.m. — Wilson makes up for his false start with an 18 yard reception before he’s downed by several Steeler defenders at the Jets 43. Hall takes the next carry and is stopped at the line of scrimmage to bring up second down.

10:08 p.m. — Boswell kicks it off to the end zone and the Jets will begin on their own 30. Wilson false starts on the first snap of the half, pushing the Jets back to the 25 for first-and-long.

Halftime: Jets 15, Steelers 13

9:53 p.m. — Rodger’s makes a completion to Wilson after Boswell’s kickoff is returned by Davis, but the clock runs out to end the half. The Jets are up by one score, and Rodgers has completed 13-19 for 158 with a score and an interception, while Wilson slowly improved as the half went on, ending with 8-17 passing for 145 yards and a touchdown.

Jets 15, Steelers 13

9:50 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN STEELERS! With 37 seconds remaining, Wilson throws an incompletion to Warren and the Steelers have second-and-ten to go at the Jets 11. Then, Wilson finds Pickens in the far right corner who makes a stunning catch for the score. Pittsburgh shaves the deficit to two just before halftime with Boswell’s extra point.

9:49 p.m. — The Steelers QB takes another deep shot intended for Pickens, but Jets CB Gardner gets his hand on it and swats it away. However, he is called for pass interference, and the Steelers get the ball on the Jets 11 with a fresh set of downs before calling timeout.

9:47 p.m. — Wilson’s first snap goes to Jefferson, who pulls it in for 11 yards. Warren gets the next handoff for another three before Tomlin calls Pittsburgh’s first timeout of the half.

9:45 p.m. — INTERCEPTION STEELERS! Hall gets another carry for six yards to the Jets 36, then Rodgers fires one up the middle intended for Wilson. Bishop gets in front of it, reaching behind with one hand for the pick. Pittsburgh gets the ball back at their own 46 with 1:15 to score.

9:40 p.m. — Hall gets the first handoff of the drive and took it three yards, followed by a deep shot from Rodgers to Lazard, who makes the catch at the Jets 30 for a huge gain. The clock winds down to the two minute warning with New York ahead by nine.

9:37 p.m. — STEELERS PUNT. Waitman boots it to the seven where Williams downs it. The Jets will regain possession with 3:10 remaining before halftime. 

9:35 p.m. — Wilson completes a pass to Pruitt, but it is negated by an ineligible downfield pass and offensive holding on Pittsburgh. Wilson was then sacked on second-and-long before hitting Pickens for a 12 yard gain, but it wasn’t enough for a fresh set of downs.

9:33 p.m. — It’s worth noting Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich threw a challenge flag before the touchdown, but it came in too late. Fortunately, New York came away with more points on the play than before.

9:32 p.m. — Zurlein’s boots it for a touchback and Wilson’s first pass is a big one, right to Freiermuth for a 30 yard gain to the Jets 40. 

Jets 15, Steelers 6

9:28 p.m. — JETS TOUCHDOWN! Conklin makes his first reception of the game for a one yard score. However, Zurlein’s extra point was blocked and a flag was thrown on the play. It was on Steelers defender Fitzpatrick was penalized for using his hands while jumping over the line of scrimmage, resulting in a replay. The Jets elected to go for two, and Rodgers completed the attempt to Wilson for a nine point lead with 5:29 remaining.

9:25 p.m. — Rodgers looks for Charles in the back of the end zone but overthrows him, bringing up second down. Hall takes it up the middle and is brought down just shy of the goal line, leaving just one yard to go between the Jets and their second score of the game.

9:22 p.m. — Allen takes his first carry of the game for one yard to the 40, bringing up second-and-nine. Rodgers then finds Hall up the middle, and he takes it all the way inside the 10 for a massive gain. The Jets now have first-and-goal from the three.

9:20 p.m. — Boswell’s kickoff goes to Gipson in the end zone, and he returns it to the 29. Rodgers first pass goes to Adams for his second completion to the receiver tonight, gaining 11 for a first down.

Jets 7, Steelers 6

9:19 p.m. — STEELERS FIELD GOAL! Boswell hits a 29-yarder to bring Pittsburgh within one and 8:20 in the half. 

9:18 p.m. — The Jets make a huge stop on second-and-five, taking down Harris for a loss of six to bring up third-and-long. Wilson fails to find a receiver on the next play and throws it out of the end zone, setting up fourth down in field goal range.

9:16 p.m. — Wilson makes another big play, passing it to Washington who turns and pushes his way all the way to the Jets 11 for 18 yards. Harris takes another handoff for five more and the Steelers are inside the 10.

9:15 p.m. — Wilson fires it deep for Pickens down the left sideline and he makes the catch for a 44-yard gain, Wilson’s biggest reception of the night coming at just the right time. Warren takes the next handoff for three and the Steelers have second down at the Jets 29.

9:13 p.m. — Harris gets Wilson’s first snap and only gets a yard, then the QB pitches it to the RB again and he gets two more before Freiermuth is called for offensive holding, pushing Pittsburgh back to the 34 for second-and-long.

9:10 p.m. — JETS PUNT. Morstead punts it for the fourth consecutive punt in a row, and Austin makes a fair catch at the Steelers 31. Rodgers is 8-12 for 73 yards so far whereas Wilson is 2-8 for just 19.

9:07 p.m. — Rodgers find Hall again, this time in the air, for five yards. Then, the QB is engulfed inside the five with his arm coming forward, and he loses the ball for an incomplete pass. He finds Adams for 10 but it isn’t enough for the first down, bringing up fourth-and-one from the 22.

9:05 p.m. — STEELERS PUNT. Waitman’s boot goes 51 yards and is fair caught by Gibson. Hall takes a handoff from Rodgers to start the drive and gets four, but Vera-Tucker is called for holding and suddenly its first-and-long from the seven.

9:04 p.m. — Wilson tries to pass it out wide but misses a wide open Austin before he misses the WR again to go three-and-out for the third time in a row. Steelers fans are understandably frustrated and let out a round of boos as the offense exits the field.

End of first quarter: Jets 7, Steelers 3

9:01 p.m. — JETS PUNT. Morstead kicks it 46 yards to Austin, who is downed at the 34 for no gain. Harris’ takes the first handoff for two yards as the clock winds down to ends the quarter, with New York in front by a score.

9 p.m. — Rodgers can’t complete it yet again, searching for Wilson on the left sideline but floating it way over his head. The WR was under strong coverage, and the Jets will go three-and-out as well.

8:58 p.m. — Jackson makes a big stop, taking down hall for a loss of one on the first snap of the drive. Rodgers then struggles to find a wide open Adams coming across the field to set up third-and-long from the 20.

8:57 p.m. — STEELERS PUNT. Waitman’s kick goes 55 yards to Gipson, who catches it and moves forward for four before he runs out of bounds. There is 1:38 to go in the quarter.

8:56 p.m. — Harris take a handoff, but Mills stuffs him for a loss of two. On third-and-12, Wilson tries to find Frieiermuth but it’s deflected by a Jets defender. The Steelers will go three-and-out again.

8:55 p.m. — Zurlein kicks it off for a touchback, and Wilson’s first pass from the 30 goes short intended for Pickens.

Jets 7, Steelers 3

8:52 p.m. — JETS SCORE! Rodgers facilitates the first touchdown drive of the game thanks to a 13-yard run by Hall, who was a major factor in the entire series. New York leads by four with 2:27 in the first.

8:51 p.m. — Rodgers finds Hall in the air for 13 before handing it off to Allen for two more yards. On second-and-eight, Rodgers passed it to Wilson on the left sideline. The WR breaks a tackle and advances inside the 15 for a first down.

8:49 p.m. — On third-and-one, Rodgers passes it short to Lazard who reaches for the marker and is called short. However, the replay assistants up in the booth overturned the call and the Jets were given a first down at the Pittsburgh 40.

8:47 p.m. — Rodgers misses Hall, but then he finds Adams for the pair’s first connection as Jets. He brought the team to the 50 with the reception before Hall takes a handoff and is stuffed for a loss of three. 

8:45 p.m. — Hall takes a handoff, but he’s taken down for a loss of one. During the play, Ogunjobi, who was on the tackle, was flagged for uneccessary roughness after dragging Hall to the ground violently. That would give New York possession at their own 32.

8:40 p.m. — STEELERS PUNT. Waitman boots it 43 yards to Gipson, who muffs the catch. Thankfully, it bounces out of bounds before anyone can recover it, giving the Jets back possession at their own 18 with 8:08 to go in the quarter.

8:38 p.m. — Wilson’s second effort starts with a short pass to Warren, who takes it forward for four to the 40. Warren takes the next snap and goes for five more before Wilson fails to find Austin, who had it for a moment, on third-and-one. 

8:34 p.m. — JETS PUNT. Rodgers’ first drive comes to an end abruptly as Ogunjobi sacks him in the backfield after the QB took too much time looking for a receiver downfield. Morstead punts it to the Steelers 36 where Hennessy makes a fair catch.

8:33 p.m. — Boswell’s kick is returned by Davis to the Jets 22 from inside the end zone. Rodgers first pass is incomplete on his first attempt to Adams, then Hall powers forward for two to bring up third-and-seven at the 24.

Steelers 3, Jets 0

8:30 p.m. — FIELD GOAL STEELERS! Boswell hits a 46-yarder and Wilson puts away his first scoring drive of the season, albeit just three points. Pittsburgh leads with 11:33 to go in the first and Rodgers’ first series is up next.

8:29 p.m. — Warren gets the next handoff and takes it for four before Wilson throws it away on third-and-five after facing pressure. On fourth down, out comes the field goal team for Pittsburgh.

8:28 p.m. — Harris’ second handoff takes the running back well into Jets territory before he is muscled down out of bounds at New York’s 33. The QB takes it himself the next play for a one yard gain to set up second-and-nine.

8:25 p.m. — Harris takes the first handoff for Pittsburgh for four yards to the 34. Then, Wilson completes his first pass as a Steeler to Washington for a 15-yard gain up the right sideline just shy of midfield.

8:23 p.m. — Zurlein kicks it off into the end zone for a touchback, and the Steelers will start on their own 30.

8:20 p.m. — New York wins the coin toss and defers. Wilson will get his first drive to start the game momentarily.

Pregame

8:16 p.m. — Wilson is officially announced as the Steelers starter before game time and runs out onto the field.

8:15 p.m. — Wilson spoke just before kickoff, expressing excitement to make his first start in the black and yellow.

8:10 p.m. — In an unexpected fan reveal, Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquatino is supporting the Jets. 

8 p.m. — Wilson spent some time before re-entering the field pregame hyping up his starting offense as he prepares to make his first start in a Steelers uniform.

7:45 p.m. — Here’s a first look at Adams in Jets threads pregame with about 30 minutes to go before kickoff. Notice the cheeky reference to Taylor Swift’s song “…Ready for it” from her “Reputation” album.

7:10 p.m. — Finally, everyone’s lingering question has been answered. Wilson will start over Fields tonight for the Steelers against Rodgers. The two have played seven times, twice in the playoffs, with Rodgers leading the series 4-3. Each has won a postseason matchup versus the other.

7 p.m. — The Steelers followed with their own report shortly after. C Zach Frazier (ankle), OLB Nick Herbig (hamstring) and RB Cordarrelle Patterson (ankle) are out as expected. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh will be without WR Roman Wilson who was questionable throughout the week with his own hamstring issue. Mercifully, DT Montravious Adams (knee) will play.

6:55 p.m. — New York has announced its inactives for tonight. As expected, CB Michael Carter II will not play after suffering a back injury. Fellow CB DJ Reed will also sit out with a groin issue after he was considered questionable throughout the week. LB Chazz Surratt and TE Tyler Conklin will both appear, however, after dealing with heel and hip injuries in practices recently.

6:30 p.m. — A wholesome reunion is on the books at tonight’s game in Pittsburgh. The 1974 Steelers team, one that won the franchise’s first Super Bowl title against the Vikings, 16-6, is back together for the matchup.

6:20 p.m. — The weather tonight will be fairly cool with temperatures in the mid 60s decreasing into the upper 50s by the end of the game. There is no rain in the forecast for the game in East Rutherford.

6:05 p.m. — Among the several storylines in tonight’s matchup is Rodgers and Adams’ reunion. After having played together for four seasons in Green Bay, the two suit up for the first time in Pittsburgh. The Jets are 2.5-point favorites on average against the Steelers.

New York vs. Pittsburgh will air nationally on NBC. Mike Tirico (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst), and Melissa Stark (sideline reporter) will call the action.
