Mexico will be hoping that a strong run at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup will help quell the crisis that followed El Tri’s embarrassing loss to the USA in the Nations League. That Gold Cup adventure begins against Honduras on Sunday.
The 3-0 loss to the Americans cost Diego Cocca his job after just seven matches at the helm, with 2021 Olympic coach Jaime Lozano taking over on an interim basis. Lozano will be hoping to impress enough to put himself in the running for the full-time gig.
Lozano’s first match in charge will be a tough one against a Honduras side that has usually been a tough opponent for El Tri. Their last meeting came in March 2022, a narrow 1-0 victory for Mexico.
Honduras are on a revival tour of their own during this Gold Cup following a disappointing last-place finish in 2022 World Cup qualifying, going winless in 14 matches.
