The stakes of The Game have rarely been higher.

There is plenty on the line for Ohio State and Michigan when the two face off in Ann Arbor for the latest edition of the biggest rivalry in college football. Ohio State, fresh off two blowout defeats, is looking to prove it can finally be the more physical team in a pivotal matchup. Michigan, still in the midst of an NCAA investigation, is looking to prove to the world that there should be no question who the better team is in 2023 after sign-stealing allegations have clouded its past two victories over Ohio State.

And for both teams, there is of course the obvious: the College Football Playoff. The 2023 edition of The Game is a de facto quarterfinal CFP matchup. The winner will almost certainly be double-digit favorites over Iowa in the Big Ten championship, and appears as near a lock as any to reach the CFP. Unlike last year, when Ohio State lost and still made it to the playoff, the road to a CFP berth appears cloudy for the loser given the crowded race for the final spots in this year’s CFP.

This game has all the makings of a narrow defensive battle. Michigan and Ohio State rank in the top three in both total defense and scoring defense. And after last year the Wolverines were a dominant rushing team and the Buckeyes a dominant passing team, both have taken steps back in 2023, and now are more balanced, if also more inconsistent offenses.

Ohio State vs. Michigan live updates, results, highlights from 2023 rivalry game

Second quarter

1:49 p.m.: From 52 yards out, Fielding hooks a field goal try wide left. Michigan will get the ball back to start the second half leading 14-10.

1:46 p.m.: McCord tries two straight passes to running backs, first missing Trayanum, then connecting with Henderson for a yard before he’s lit up by Mike Sainristil. McCord connects with Stover for seven yards to bring up a fourth-and-2. Ohio State lets the clock wind down to three seconds left, and they’ll try a field goal to end the half.

1:44 p.m.: McCord steps through pressure in the pocket and fires a rocket down to Harrison, who fights through pass interference to make a one-handed catch at the Michigan 42. Forty-four yards to flip the field.

1:43 p.m.: The ruling of a catch is confirmed. First down, Ohio State with 1:34 left in the half. Fox’s Tom Rinaldi reports Henderson is on the sideline with his ankle taped up.

1:40 p.m.: Trayanum gets a yard on the second-down run, then McCord connects with Julian Fleming for an impressive throw for nine yards out to the Ohio State 14 for a first down. The play is under review after the ball popped out at the end.

1:39 p.m.: Henderson rushes ahead for two yards, but more concerning, he comes up limping a bit and has to head off the field. He’s crucial to their running game.

1:36 p.m.: Great punt and coverage by Tommy Doman and Michigan to pin Ohio State all the way back at its own 2-yard line.

1:34 p.m.: Corum is contained for only two yards to bring up a third-and-5. The next drive, Ohio State gets to McCarthy for the first time today, with Michael Hall and Jack Sawyer sacking him for a loss of five to bring up a punt.

1:32 p.m.: Edwards catches a quick pass to the right for five yards to start the Michigan drive, then McCarthy makes an incredible throw to Cornelius Johnson for 19 yards out to the sideline to vault Michigan up to the 49. Michigan quickly gets up to the line and rushes for a pickup of three.

1:29 p.m.: Michigan will take the touchback and start at the 25.

1:25 p.m. Ohio State scoring play: Trayanum picks up four, then McCord connects it with Egbuka for a three-yard touchdown to give the Buckeyes their first touchdown of the day. It’s a one-score game with 6:27 left in the first half. Michigan 14, Ohio State 10

1:23 p.m.: Another huge penalty on the Michigan defense, this one a holding penalty after a run of four yards by Johnson. That bumps Ohio State up to the Michigan 7.

1:22 p.m.: Another pass, this time to Henderson over the middle, and he races it around to the Michigan 19 for another first down.

1:21 p.m.: Egbuka makes a short catch underneath and picks up six yards. Buckeyes trying to get McCord in a rhythm now with two straight completions.

1:20 p.m.: Chip Trayanum with a physical run of nine yards on his first carry of the day. Then McCord drops a perfect pass to Stover over the middle for 32 yards and a big gain to Michigan’s 32.

1:19 p.m.: Ohio State’s Xavier Johnson returns the kickoff up to the Ohio State 27.

1:15 p.m. Michigan scoring play: First explosive play of the game for Michigan as McCarthy threads a needle for a perfect throw to Wilson between a pair of defenders into the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown pass. A review confirms it’s a touchdown and not an interception. Michigan 14, Ohio State 3

1:13 p.m.: Edwards was halted for no gain on a first down carry, then McCarthy throws it well over the end zone and Wilson after some pressure from the defensive line.

1:10 p.m.: Review spots McCarthy a yard shy of the marker. Michigan goes for it again on fourth down, and this time, McCarthy throws a quick pass to Loveland to the right and it’s completed for seven yards to the Ohio State 22. Michigan is three-for-three on fourth-down attempts.

1:08 p.m.: McCarthy scrambles out to the right, and it appears he was stopped short on the run, though officials gave him the mark on the field. The spot is under review. If overturned, it will be a fourth-and-inches.

1:08 p.m.: Edwards gains a pair on back-to-back carries as Ohio State has still done well containing the Michigan running game, bringing up a third-and-6.

1:06 p.m.: Corum leaps over the pile, and the officials give him the spot for the fourth-down conversion.

1:04 p.m.: Big early decision by Michigan as a quick catch to the left from AJ Barner brings up a fourth-and-1 from the Ohio State 39. Wolverines appear to be opting to go for it, but they have to use a timeout over some apparent personnel issues.

First quarter

1 p.m.: McCarthy tries a deep shot down the right side to Wilson, but it comes up empty. Edwards gets a carry up the middle for two yards to bring up the end of the first quarter.

12:57 p.m.: McCarthy is getting loose in the passing game now, firing a quick pass off a play action over the middle to Colston Loveland for 16 yards to the Ohio State 48. Ohio State uses its second timeout of the quarter after the play.

12:56 p.m.: Roman Wilson gets his first grab of the day and takes it nine yards out to the right. Then Edwards picks up Michigan’s first non-touchdown, first down of the day, picking up two yards to the right.

12:53 p.m. Ohio State scoring play: McCord misses Egbuka out to the left, and the Buckeyes’ drive will stall out. Jayden Fielding boots the 43-yard field goal to put the Buckeyes on the board with 2:13 left in the first quarter. Michigan 7, Ohio State 3

12:51 p.m.: Henderson picks up two on a first-down carry and McCord is nearly intercepted on a pass down the field to Stover. Buckeyes have a third-and-8 coming up.

12:49 p.m.: Huge penalty tacked onto a three-yard grab by Cade Stover moves Ohio State up 15 yards to the Michigan 27.

12:48 p.m.: Impressive grab by Harrison, who makes a back-shoulder grab for 24 yards to the Michigan 45. First time Buckeyes get into Wolverine territory today.

12:46 p.m.: Henderson just gets to the corner and picks up four yards to the right on the first-down run. Second carry, he goes to the left for the first time today, and picks up a pair to set up a third-and-4.

12:46 p.m.: Buckeyes will take the touchback to start their next drive.

12:42 p.m. Michigan scoring play: Corum is stopped just short of the goal-line on second down, and after he’s denied on the ruling of a physical third-down run, he powers over the line on the fourth-down run to break the scoreless tie. Michigan 7, Ohio State 0

12:38 p.m.: Corum is tackled for only about a yard on the first-down run. 

12:36 p.m.: And starting Ohio State’s next drive, McCord throws an interception to Will Johnson and brings it back to the OSU 7-yard line. In what has been a defensive battle so far, that could be a huge play the rest of this game.

12:32 p.m.: McCarthy doesn’t see anyone open and tries to break out to the right, but he’s tackled short of the first down, and Ohio State forces another three-and-out. The punt rolls into the end zone for a 79-yard boot, which is farther than both Ohio State’s two punts combined.

12:31 p.m.: Corum bottled up for a yard on a first-down carry, then Edwards gets a nice boost to pick up five yards running through the right side to bring up a third-and-4.

12:28 p.m.: Another lackluster punt by Mirco of 36 yards, but the better field position puts Michigan at its own 21.

12:27 p.m.: McCord misses a wide-open Marvin Harrison Jr. to set up a second straight second-and-long, then Henderson is brought down for a loss of a yard again running to the right. McCord then connects with Xavier Johnson, who gets 10 yards back and brings up a short fourth-and-1 just behind the 50. Ohio State opts to punt instead of going for it.

12:25 p.m.: Henderson gets only two yards running to the right on the first-down carry, but he then catches a pass over the middle and picks up 11 to get the first, first down of the game by either team.

12:20 p.m.: McCarthy throws an outside screen to Donovan Edwards, but the Ohio State defense gets to him at the line of scrimmage and blows up the screen, bringing him down for no gain. Two three-and-outs in what has been anticipated as a potential defensive struggle. Ebguka fair catches the punt at the OSU 24.

12:20 p.m.: J.J. McCarthy fires a low pass to start the drive, then Blake Corum rushes for five to set up a third-and-5 for Michigan. 

12:18 p.m.: And a short punt for Jesse Mirco that spots Michigan at its own 35.

12:18 p.m.: Rough start for the Buckeyes, as Henderson is stopped for no gain, and then Emeka Egbuka drops a pass for what would have been a first down. Buckeyes go three-and-out to start the game.

12:17 p.m.: TreVeyon Henderson begins the game with a solid run up the middle for a pickup of five yards.

12:15 p.m.: Ohio State will take the touchback and start the game at the 25.

12:14 p.m.: Michigan won the toss and opted to defer to the second half. Ohio State will begin the game on offense.

12:12 p.m.: The Buckeyes are out of the tunnel. This game is just about to get underway.

12:07 p.m.: The “Big Noon Kickoff” crew is also split on the game, this panel leaning toward Michigan. Brady Quinn picked Ohio State, Mark Ingram picked the Wolverines, Matt Leinart picked Michigan, Charles Woodson picked Michigan and Urban Meyer gives it two picks for the Buckeyes.

12:01 p.m.: The “College GameDay” panel is split on the winner. Desmond Howard and Aidan Hutchinson are picking Michigan. Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit pick Ohio State. Lee Corso is the tiebreaker, putting on Brutus.

11:59 a.m.: Time for the national anthem at Michigan Stadium. Kickoff is just about 15 minutes away in the biggest game of the year.

11:51 a.m.: Ohio State is getting quite the welcome reception from the Michigan fans in Ann Arbor.

11:23 a.m.: Jim Harbaugh won’t be coaching on the sidelines for The Game. But if the team wins today, it sounds like Michigan might be headed from the Big House to Harbaugh’s house to celebrate with their head coach.

10:58 a.m.: Ryan Day talks about what’s ahead in the big game, including keeping emotions in check and the importance of winning the running game on both sides of the ball.
