The Braves were fresh off a World Series win and finishing second in the National League heading into the 2022 playoffs. Yet all it took was four games for the Phillies to stun Atlanta, crushing them in the NLDS en route to a World Series appearance.
Now, the Braves look as dangerous as any team in baseball history. Atlanta’s offense posted a 124 OPS+, the highest adjusted OPS+ since the 1931 Yankees, per Stathead. Though the pitching was not as dominant, posting a 4.14 ERA, it largely did not matter as Atlanta just scored so many runs against its opponents it did not matter how many runs it gave up.
One offense that just might have the firepower to keep up is the 2023 Phillies. Philadelphia slugged past the Marlins in the wild-card round, and the lineup looked as formidable as it did last year, with Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and Bryson Stott among the stars in the loaded unit.

The Phillies also might have the pitching needed to quiet the Braves. Zack Wheeler has turned in an outstanding 2023 campaign, and though Aaron Nola has struggled this season, he is still more than capable of holding up in the playoffs.
That pitching staff will still have its work cut out for it. From top to bottom, Atlanta’s lineup is loaded, led by Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson, who both posted an OPS+ over 160. And if that’s not enough, on the pitching side, the Braves have four starters with ERAs below 4.00, led by MLB strikeout leader Spencer Strider.
