The I-5 rivalry is back, and the stakes are higher than ever.
The Padres swept the Braves at Petco Park earlier this week, overcoming a depleted Atlanta roster without ace Chris Sales and fighting their way into the National League Division Series against their NL West rival Dodgers for the second time in three years.
A 12-strikeout effort by pitcher Michael King in Game 1, home runs in each matchup for catcher Kyle Higashioka and heavy contributions from veteran third-baseman Manny Machado, All-Star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and rookie slugger Jackson Merrill propelled the Friars through to the second round.
The problem for the Padres? They’ll have to face one of the most stacked Dodgers rosters ever, one that features arguably the greatest baseball player of all time. Shohei Ohtani will make is postseason debut this weekend after spending six years with the Angels, earning mediocre results.
The Japanese legend enters Saturday’s matchup as the only member of the 50-50 club, having accomplished the combined home run-stolen base feat less than two weeks before the playoffs began.

It’s hard to quantify Ohtani’s greatness, especially considering he has yet to take the mound in a Dodgers uniform, but he is by far and away having the best season of his career. In 636 at-bats, the slugger has 134 runs on 197 hits, as well as 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases. And that’s not even the half of it.
Couple Ohtani’s success with the likes of Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Jack Flaherty and Miguel Rojas, and the Padres have their work cut out for them. The last time both teams met in the 2022 NLDS, however, it was San Diego that made it out alive.
Behind a strong bullpen showing, San Diego upset the 111-win Dodgers for a trip to the Pennant series against Philadelphia. Though the team did not make it to the World Series, the 2024 Padres are built to repeat the magic from two years ago.
Nevertheless, they will have to make it through Ohtani & Co. this time around. Here’s everything to know about Dodgers vs. Padres, including Ohtani updates, results, and highlights from the 2024 NLDS Game 1.

Second inning
9:20 p.m. — Edman steps in looking to load the bases and gets Cease to 2-1. Then, the Padres infielders surround the pitcher and use a mound visit before he strikes Edman out swinging.
9:16 p.m. — Smith works Cease to his second 3-2 count of the night before he walks to start off the bottom of the inning. Lux steps up next and singles to center to put Smith in scoring position with no outs.
9:12 p.m. — Arraez is back up coming off a single and a run in the first inning. He calls timeout after three pitches from Yamamoto, two strikes and a ball, before he strikes out for the pitchers first K of the game. The Padres come up hitless in the second and Smith will lead off for the Dodgers.
9:10 p.m. — Solano steps up as the Padres No. 8 hitter and grounds out to Muncy at third who slings it to Freeman at first for the out. Higashioka is next and does exactly the same thing to put two outs on the board quickly in the top of the inning.
First inning: Padres 3, Dodgers 0
9:05 p.m. — With Betts at third and Hernández on first and two outs on the board, Muncy steps up and gets Cease to 2-2. Then, the ace strikes him out to end the inning, maintaining the Padres lead.

9 p.m. — Betts works Cease to a 3-2 count, then Cease throws his fourth ball and deals his first walk. Freeman steps up to bat third, notably coming off a sprained ankle.
8:58 p.m. — Cease’s fifth pitch of the at-bat is also a ball, but then Ohtani flies out to Profar for the first out of the half-inning. Up next is Betts.
8:57 p.m. — Cease and Ohtani face off to start the bottom of the inning, and Ohtani swings on the first pitch for a strike. He hits the next two foul, both fastballs, then takes a ball to bring the count to 1-2.

Padres 3, Dodgers 0
8:50 p.m. — Machado steps to the plate to another round of boos and almost immediately smashes one into the stands, sending home Tatis Jr. with his 11th postseason home run.

8:40 p.m. — Yamamoto’s first pitch to Arraez goes for a strike and tonight’s NLDS opener is underway. The leadoff hitter then smacks one into left field for a single, and the pitcher gives up his first hit of the night.

8:33 p.m. — With just about 15 minutes until first pitch, it’s worth mentioning the Dodgers are favored on average by 1.5 runs with the O/U set at 7.5. Padres pitcher Cease has pitched against the Dodgers twice this season, giving up a total of four runs on eight hits and earning a win in one. Yamamoto has faced the Padres twice as well, giving up eight runs on eight hits, including two homers and one loss.
8:30 p.m. — In contrast to Machado, Ohtani is welcomed with rousing applause as he’s introduced as the team’s DH and first in the order.

8:25 p.m. — Former Dodger Machado is greeted with a round of boos as he’s introduced to the Los Angeles crowd. He spent part of the 2018 season with the Dodgers before he was traded to the Padres, playing in 66 games and notching 13 home runs, 42 RBIs and and 36 runs.

8:20 p.m. — Rather than going with usual first game pitcher Flaherty, the Dodgers are starting the series off with Yamamoto. Along with Ohtani, he is the second Japanese player to make his playoff debut for Los Angeles tonight.
8:10 p.m. — Notably, the Padres won the regular season series against their divisional rivals 8-5 through five separate series. Because of this, many are predicting San Diego to upset the Dodgers in the NLDS for the second time in three years. Even MLB great Derek Jeter is looking forward to the NL West clash.

7:55 p.m. — Two of four games today have been played in full so far. The Guardians handled the Tigers 7-0 at home while the Mets upset the Phillies in Philadelphia 6-2 on top of a late rally in the eighth. The Yankees and Royals are neck and neck right now in New York, with the score at 3-2 Kansas City in the top of the fifth.
7:35 p.m. — When asked if he was nervous ahead of his first playoff game, Ohtani gave a simple “nope” and did not elaborate, eliciting laughter from himself and some of the reporters in the room.

7:25 p.m. — We are just over an hour away from first pitch in Los Angeles, and both teams have arrived at Dodger Stadium. Lineups were announced earlier this afternoon, as well. The Dodgers will start righty Yamamoto on the mound (7-2, 3.00 ERA) and the Padres will rely on ace Cease (14-11, 3.47 ERA), who threw the second no-hitter in team history earlier this season.
Freeman made the cut for Los Angeles after rolling his ankle in the team’s season-ending series. Manager Roberts is going with the same lineup he used in Freeman’s last game against San Diego, with the exception of Rojas entering at SS and Edman moving to CF, replacing Pages. San Diego’s only change is swapping Solano and Cronenworth in the batting order.
