The prevailing storyline from the first round of the U.S. Open very quickly became the 18-hole scores of Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele.

Fowler and Schauffele didn’t just pace the field, they blew it out of the water early on at Los Angeles Country Club with the lowest rounds in the history of the U.S. Open — matching 62s. Both had a chance to birdie their 18th hole, which would have set the record for lowest round in a major.

Instead, they settled for pars to set the U.S. Open mark. By the time they finished Round 1, both golfers had a five-stroke lead over Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau, who were at 3 under. That raised the question: Is the U.S. Open already a two-man race?

That remains to be seen. More players went low in the afternoon, with Dustin Johnson and Wyndham Clark each shooting 6-under 64s to cut Fowler and Schauffele’s co-lead to two.

Fowler and Schauffele will obviously be the headliners Friday, but there are plenty of storylines — and good golf — to follow as the cut tracker comes into play.
