The U.S. Open is headed west, as the Los Angeles Country Club is set to host its first major championship. Could there be a first-time major champion to go along with it?

A pair of former U.S. Open champions have already won a major this year, with Jon Rahm taking the Masters green jacket and Brooks Koepka coming out on top at the PGA Championship. This event, on the other hand, has served as a launching pad for players over the last three years, with Bryson DeChambeau (2020), Rahm (2021), and Matt Fitzpatrick (2022) all winning their first major title at the U.S. Open.

The four betting favorites entering Thursday all have major championships under their belt, but Viktor Hovland will be a name to watch after his Memorial Tournament win and second-place finish at the PGA Championship

Thursday’s first-round action will also start under the cloud of the recent merger agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Weeks after Koepka became the first active LIV golfer to win a major, there are more questions than answers regarding how and why the rival tours came together to strike a deal.

U.S. Open live updates, highlights from Thursday’s Round 1

(All times Eastern)

5:50 p.m. — The South African Thriston Lawrence gets back to even with a nicely played birdie from the rough at the 8th hole.

5:42 p.m. — Here’s a look at the scorecards from Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele, who both had a historic day at the U.S. Open.

5:38 p.m. — Alejandro Del Rey puts forth a good effort at the 6th hole and almost sinks the hole-in-one, which would’ve been a great highlight, but he’s worthy of some recognition regardless.

5:26 p.m. — Not a great start for reigning champion Matt Fitzpatrick, who opens his day with back-to-back bogeys.

5:15 p.m. — High expectations follow Rory McIlroy into this U.S. Open, and he opens his first round with a birdie.

5:07 p.m. — Back-to-back birdies for Phil Mickelson, who sits 2-under through his first four holes.

5:05 p.m. — Just like that, the lead is back to five for Fowler and Schauffele. Barjon finishes his day with a bogey, just as Scheffler did.

4:59 p.m. — There’s a serious gap between the two leaders and the rest of the field, but a surprise name just cut into it: Paul Barjon. The French-born golfer is 4-under through 17 holes.

4:42 p.m. — You can’t ask for much better of a start than Wyndham Clark, who eagles the first hole. 2-under after one hole? Impressive.

4:39 p.m. — Schauffle does make history along with Fowler, finishing with a 62. He’s hoping to enter Friday with a share of the lead alongside Fowler, and it’ll take a record-breaking performance for that not to be reality.

4:26 p.m. — Disappointing end to an otherwise strong day for Scottie Scheffler, who bogeys the 18th hole and drops five strokes back of the lead. That was his first bogey since the opening hole.

4:25 p.m. — Make room, Rickie. Xander Schauffele with a birdie to join in on Fowler’s history-making day by moving one hole away from a 62. Schauffele and Fowler sit atop the leaderboard at 8-under, and it’ll be tough for anyone to catch them today.

4:17 p.m. — Fowler’s day is done, and it was a historic one: He shot a 62, the best round in U.S. Open history.

4:07 p.m. — Schauffele isn’t letting Fowler get too comfortable at the top. He birdies the 7th hole and is two holes away from a bogey-free day.

3:59 p.m. — Rickie Fowler now has TEN birdies today. That’s never happened in a U.S. Open round, according to the USGA.

3:43 p.m. — Scottie Scheffler continues to be one of the most consistent players on the course. He’s not letting Fowler pull too far ahead.

3:18 p.m. — Back-to-back birdies have Viktor Hovland down to 2-under. The Norwegian golfer has had a great spring but is still looking to win his first major.

2:56 p.m. — We’re getting closer to the second slate of golfers teeing off. In the meantime, Xander Schauffele is back within one stroke of the lead after a birdie on the second hole. He’s had a bogey-free day so far.

2:43 p.m. — Rickie Fowler is having a dominant opening round. He’s now 6-under through 12 holes, with eight birdies already and four in a row.

2:42 p.m. — A hole-in-one at the U.S. Open for Matthieu Pavon!

2:33 p.m. — Two familiar names have separated themselves: Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffle, who are three and two shots clear of the rest of the field, respectively.

2:11 p.m. — Leaderboard shift! Rickie Fowler is now the standalone leader after his sixth birdie of the day, as Solomon bogeys the 16th hole.

2:07 p.m. — Scottie is starting to find his groove. Excellent putt here for a birdie.

2:00 p.m. — Patrick Reed and Justin Rose are two of the most notable names near the bottom of the leaderboard. Reed and Rose are both 5-over, while Justin Thomas is 3-under.

1:56 p.m. — After a birdie on 15, Jacob Solomon is now the standalone leader at 4-under.

1:41 p.m. — Have a day, Rickie Fowler. He’s 3-under through nine and has a share of the lead.

1:02 p.m. — Back-to-back bogeys slips Morales to 1-under after his excellent start.

12:56 p.m. — Xander Schauffele just moved into a tie for the lead with a birdie on 14. He’s birdied three of his first five holes at LACC.

12:55 p.m. — What a shot by Si Woo Kim here. Kim is one stroke off the lead at 2-under.

12:44 p.m. — Bryson DeChambeau has momentum! He posts back-to-back birdies to move to 1-under after a tough start.

12:21 p.m. — Morales is getting the amateur attention so far, but Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent is now 1-under after back-to-back birdies.

12:10 p.m. — Rough start for former U.S. Open winner Collin Morikawa, who bogeys his first two holes.

12:05 p.m. — What a start for amateur Omar Morales, who’s tied for the lead at 3-under through nine holes.

11:44 a.m. — Birdies for both Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele on the 10th hole to start their days. How about this putt by Schauffele?

11:37 a.m. — Bryson DeChambeau needed this to avoid falling four strokes back of the lead early in his first round.

11:27 a.m. — Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa both getting started now…

11:23 a.m. — Both Jacob Solomon and amateur Omar Morales move to 2-under with sixth hole birdies. This was tremendous by Solomon.

11:15 a.m. — Nice start for Shane Lowry, who opens his U.S. Open with a birdie.

11:12 a.m. — We have our first player to go 2-under par: Dylan Wu. Wu birdies the second and third holes to take an early lead.

10:30 a.m. — After a strong showing at the PGA Championship, Adam Svensson is on the board with an early birdie on hole No. 1.

10:07 a.m. — Right on cue, Omar Morales posts the first birdie of the weekend.

10:00 a.m. — The 2023 U.S. Open is underway! In fact, the first score on the board is a double bogey by Hank Ledbioda.

9:35 a.m. — After Texas A&M’s Sam Bennett wowed at the Masters, UCLA sophomore Omar Morales could turn into a fun story this week. Morales will be the first player to tee off in about 10 minutes.
