The first part of the United States’ quest to defend its gold medal at the Olympics is complete. The group stage is over, and now the knockout stage begins.

Team USA can punch a ticket to the semifinals this afternoon when Steve Kerr’s squad takes on Brazil in a quarterfinal matchup. The United States went a perfect 3-0 in the group stage, taking out Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico to win Group A.

It was a rotating cast of characters leading the way for the defending gold medalists through the first three games of the tournament. However, entering the knockout stage, it’s Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant paving the way on offense, with each averaging at least 16 points per game.

Looking to play spoiler is Brazil, who got into the quarterfinals despite a 1-2 record. The Brazilians defeated Japan, but lost to Germany and France in Group B, finishing third in the group. Vitor Benite and Bruno Caboclo were the leaders on offense, averaging 14.3 and 13.0 points, respectively.

The winner of this quarterfinal contest faces the victor of the Serbia vs. Australia quarterfinal in a semifinal matchup on Thursday.

End of first quarter: USA 33, Brazil 21

3:53 p.m.: Team USA is starting to lock in, taking a 12-point lead into the second quarter. Its unselfishness is shining through, dishing out 12 assists on 13 made field goals. Devin Booker set the tone with nine points and three assists.

3:47 p.m.: Team USA has gone to its second unit: Derrick White, Anthony Edwards, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo. Jayson Tatum is the odd man out once again in the first two rotations.

3:42 p.m.: Devin Booker with a four-point play! He’s off to a tremendous start for Team USA with a team-high nine points, three rebounds and three assists. Joel Embiid has also chipped in eight points, and LeBron James is orchestrating the offense with five assists. Team USA leads Brazil 27-14 with three minutes to play in the quarter.

3:37 p.m.: Stephen Curry with a pair of quick and easy layups. That could be a great sign for Team USA and a dangerous one for Brazil. The superstar guard hasn’t had his breakout game of the Olympics yet but nothing gets a good scorer going like seeing the ball go through the hoop early.

3:32 p.m.: Gui Santos picked off a pass from Joel Embiid and went coast-to-coast to get this game underway.
