The U.S. narrowly made it past the group stage of the Women’s World Cup, moving on to the knockout round after a scoreless draw with Portugal.
What was anticipated as an intense and suspenseful match, ended up being quite boring, and fans were sharing their disappointment online after staying up until sunrise in the Eastern portion of the States to watch the showdown.
Finishing 1-0-2, the USWNT acquired five points and a +3 goal differential, but it wasn’t enough to also secure the top slot in Group E, which went to the Netherlands with a 2-0-1 showing, seven points and +8 goal differential.
If the U.S. manages to defeat Sweden, which ended the group stage undefeated with nine points, it will move on to the quarterfinals. If they are defeated, this will be the earliest they have ever been eliminated from a FIFA World Cup — they’ve never finished worse than third.
