Back-to-back! Better yet, Mac-to-Mac!

An eventful NBA All-Star Saturday Night concluded with the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest. For a second consecutive year, Mac McClung emerged victorious with a show-stopping performance.

On a night when the stars shined bright and the basketball world was captivated by a first-of-its-kind LED court, McClung shined brightest, clearing the heads of multiple people while somehow meeting the expectations he set for himself in 2023.

In the final round, McClung edged out All-Star Jaylen Brown, who used the night to pay homage to several icons.

If you missed this year’s Dunk Contest, The Sporting News tracked live score updates, results and highlights from the final event of All-Star Saturday Night.

Finals

10:57 p.m.: Return of the Mac!

Mac McClung again clears the head of Shaquille O’Neal, who this time is wearing McClung’s high school jersey. The dunk earns McClung the first and only perfect score of the night, resulting in a back-to-back victory.

10:52 p.m.: Jaylen Brown apparently sees the memes about his perceived inability to go left.

With a sparkly glove on his left hand, Brown finished over Donovan Mitchell with his left hand. The dunk was enough to earn a 49.2 to bring his final score to 97.8 in the Finals.

10:50 p.m.: Mac McClung jumps over not one but two people as he has one person on the shoulders of another.

McClung clears both and finishes the dunk to earn a 48.8.

10:48 p.m.: Jaylen Brown opens the Finals with an homage to the late Terrence Clarke.

Wearing Clarke’s Brewster Academy jersey, Brown earned a 48.6 after completing a 360 windmill.

Dunk 2

10:41 p.m.: Jaylen Brown enlists the help of teammate Jayson Tatum and streamer Kai Cenat for another dunk that pays homage.

Brown jumped over a seated Cenat and received a lob from Tatum, paying homage to a former Celtics No. 7 in Dee Brown with the blindfold-esque dunk.

Brown’s dunk was met with mixed reviews but it was enough to punch his ticket to the Finals.

10:38 p.m.: Mac McClung builds on his first round by bringing out a variation of a dunk from last year’s contest.

This time around, McClung gets a 49.4. He has clinched a spot in the Finals.

10:36 p.m.: We get a 360 between-the-legs dunk from Jacob Toppin, who earns a 47.2 for Dunk 2.

10:34 p.m.: Jaime Jaquez Jr. pays homage to his Mexican-American heritage, donning a jersey that reads “El Heat Cultura” after the LED floor displayed imagery highlighting other Mexican and Mexican-American players to have graced the NBA.

Jaquez gets a 46.8 for his second dunk to bring his score to 94.2 in the round.

Dunk 1

10:31 p.m.: Mac. McClung.

He’s somehow coming out of the gates stronger than he did in 2023, doing something that has never been done before. McClung’s dunk is a little difficult to explain. A highlight does it much better justice.

10:29 p.m.: The Atlanta native pays homage to an Atlanta legend.

Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown brings out an assistant wearing a full Dominique Wilkins uniform before doing one of The Human Highlight Film’s signature dunks.

Brown gets a 48.8 for his dunk.

10:26 p.m.: Wearing the same sneakers that his brother wore to win the Dunk Contest in 2022, Jacob Toppin clears Obi Toppin’s head while grabbing the ball from him to finish on the first attempt.

His dunk earns a 47.8.

10:24 p.m.: Up first: Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Donning the Heat Culture uniform, Jaquez called upon another Heat legend in Shaquille O’Neal. Jaquez impresses with his first dunk, jumping over O’Neal to earn a 47.4.

Pre-contest

10:15 p.m.: It’s almost showtime.

The Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest and Steph vs. Sabrina Challenge are now in our rearview, and the Slam Dunk Contest is set to begin. The dunkers have been introduced and they’re ready to take center stage.

7:30 p.m.: In an interview with Shams Charania, Mac McClung reiterates that he plans on doing dunks that he has never seen done before.

His performance from last year might be hard to top.

6:10 p.m.: What is it that you should expect from this year’s Dunk Contest field? The unexpected, apparently.

Both Mac McClung and Jacob Toppin have alluded to the fact that they will do things that have never been seen before during this year’s Dunk Contest. We’ll see just how well they do so.

NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest format

The NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest consists of two rounds, with five judges scoring dunks on a scale of six to 10. The highest score a dunk can receive is 50 while 30 is the lowest possible score.

Each of the four contestants gets two dunks in the first round. The two players with the highest combined score for their two dunks will advance to the finals.

The two finalists each get two dunks in the final round. The dunker with the highest combined score for the two dunks will be named champion.

In the event of a tie in the final round, a one-dunk dunk-off will determine the champion. “Judges’ choice” will determine the outcome if there is a tie beyond the dunk-off.
